Integrated train/bus tickets

I'd be interested if anyone has an old RailLinks Manual, mentioned by Journey Solutions below, or any lists or examples of these kinds of tickets.

Their website says,

"The National Rail fares system includes over 200 "through-fares" from rail stations to non-rail served destinations, such as airports (e.g. Bristol International Airport), attractions (e.g. Bluewater mall), towns (e.g. Minehead) and villages."

So I asked if they had details. I had these replies from Jonathan Radley at Plusbus ticketing:

"...there is no list of these other National Rail train to bus through fare add-on’s available.

We have suggested to National Rail that they may wish to promote these tickets."

and:

"National Rail used to produce a printed ‘RailLinks Manual’ which listed all the train to bus and tram add-on’s that existed....this manual is no longer produced, but the vast majority of the tickets mentioned in it still exist.
...The individual Train Operating Companies will know what bus and tram add-on’s they manage. So it might be the case of contacting the TOC..."

I have a copy of one of the last published Rail Links manuals at home. I'm working away at the moment so can't get to it until next weekend. The book is too big to scan completely but I could possibly do you the chapter(s) on through bus/tram tickets. Is there anything specific that you want to know?

One thing I remember is that SailRail ticketing was more comprehensive back then, with through-fares being available nationally via zonal maps of the UK and Ireland.

Try the fares database. You can bring up all tickets whose destination NLCs start with the letter J in one fell swoop. I used to buy certain through fares as in some cases, they were cheaper than buying a normal ticket to cover the rail only element.

Thanks very much - I'm interested in through tickets including to the countryside/coast, usually in the South East.

Perhaps some through fares have connection times more suitable than getting a bus separately in rural areas, so making journeys more viable.

I emailed National Rail Customer Relations:

"I'd be interested in the other "through-fares"...
...reply from Journey Solutions...there was a RailLinks Manual...
Would it be possible to send me the latest information from that, or for National Rail to ask the operating companies what they offer so there is a current national list - which Journey Solutions seem to be interested in as well?"

The reply said:

"I do not believe that there is any consolidated list that contains all potential fares which includes Bus and Train"

and directed me to the Rangers and Rovers page.

The Raillinks Manual was one of eight volumes which, combined, formed the National Fares Manual (NFM), this went online and became part of the Fares and Retail Publication Portal (FRPP), then The Manual, and now National Rail Enquiries (internal) Knowledgebase (iKB). Plusbus information has it's own website, other passes and links should be on the National Rail website.

You'd have to buy at a ticket office. Some in the system may not actually be available to purchase, but worth a try. I'm back in end of next week - if there are any in particular you're interested in, I'll see what I can find.

As someone who use them a lot (one of the J ones), I can tell you that they are (as far as I can tell)

a) Not in a Journey Planner (as they don't take the codes, and trying to trick them by specifying a post code also doesn't work)

b) impossible to buy online

c) only available from ticket offices or guards

d) its handy to know the code for the ticket you want

e) strangely for some obvious destinations don't seem to be available

f) bus drivers will look at you in a puzzled fashion and then eventually grudgingly say "is that a plusbus, I've heard of them", and for you to give up explaining that they're not and just reply "yes"

g) standard railcard discounts apply

Try the great western website, it offer some fares if you just type in bus in the destination bar. Most of these are in the south west though.

Also putting a space after bus knocks out the ones like Busby and Shepherds Bush.

I have found the page on BRFARES.COM that shows where each one has fares to/from. It is rather strange! Take Lands End Bus for example. You can buy a train ticket between Lands End and Penzance (and never need a train!) but you can't buy Lands End to Plymouth! But Patchway & Pilning is fine. How did these destinations come to be?

The Penzance - Lands End Bus ticket is an addon that should only be sold to passengers who already hold a valid rail ticket to Penzance.

As for Patchway and Pilning, this is due to cluster pricing. As a through ticket exists for Bristol Temple Meads - Lands End Bus, it will automatically be available for Patchway - Lands End Bus because it is in the same fares cluster as Bristol.

The cost should be an extra £6 return over the Penzance fare regardless of whether you buy a through ticket or the separate addon ticket.

They might be helpfully offering the day pass instead of Land's End to Plymouth.

If there's no Land's End bus connecting at times for peak train fares to Plymouth and that bus company is covered by the Cornwall train/bus ranger ticket, then perhaps there's no need for peak or off-peak through fare.
