Installing trains and routes?

I used to have this on my old computer and enjoyed playing the game after coming out of hospital after a stroke. however since then i have had a new computer and lost everything!
I used to have a lot of The London Underground routes and it was brilliant, since my illness returned again with another stroke, i need to get the brain going again and this really helps..

I have managed to install BVE2 & 4 and can manage to play the japanese train! But and its a big but, how do i install more routes and trains? honest i am a novice with computers and need a step by step guide due to age and strokes and being numbnuts...I know that many people have probably asked exactly the same in the past, but i would appreciate any help. I have looked at websites and just cannot get my head around it.

However, with various things that have happened within BVE, a lot of the sites are no longer live and I'm not sure if you will get much at all for BVE2 as I believe it is pretty much superseded

This seems a good site for trains for BVE4 and OpenBVE too

You can do a lot worse than follow Sellis89's good advice, especially the section on BVE folder structure.

Please check your visitor messages too - I have left some information which may be of use to you. Best wishes for a full recovery from the stroke! - BVE certainly came to my rescue in this respect.

Thank you for your reply.
I have downloaded BVE5 from Mackoys site and installed it. One problem i find is my lack of knowledge in installing routes and trains to the right place.
Can you help in providing me with step by step guide and which folders to save things in, so that program can run such...
Each time i try to play it, alas i cannot find any routes or trains etc.

Thank you for your help, can you point me in the direction to find the visitors messages? Honest my brain is really slow at the moment, hence trying to cope with things its so hard trying to think straight and short term memory loss does not help.
The first stroke i had, knocked me side ways and i found that the BVE game gave me co-ordination and helped me recover. Plus when you cannot do much else it helps the brain recover.
If you can point me in the right direction and help me it is greatly appreciated. thanks again

Hi Numbnuts

I assume that as you said you have a new computer, you have Windows 7.

I can't say that I'm very good on computers, in fact the opposite applies, but I was unfer the impression that it was difficult to get BVE2 or BVE4 to work with Windows 7.

So what I did was to download Open BVE, which would have been a major feat but for the excellent instructions on www.railsimroutes.net . When you get onto their home page, click "help" (one of the options along the red line at the top of the page, and then when on the help screen, click Open BVE Help and Information which is the second section down from the top. Then, when you get that page, click "Windows XP, Vista and 7" ubder "Please select your operating system". The page you then get to then provides step by step instructions, and what is so good about it is that it shows pictures of what the various boxes you encounter on the way look like, often with things you need to do circled.

When you have finished downloading Open BVE you can then use the same site to install the Birmingham Cross City South route, which in my view is one of the best ones in existance, and off you go! It took me an hour or so to do all that, maybe longer, but its well worth it,

ill try explain to my best knowledge.

SO firstly your going to need to install the main programme. You can either install it onto a new openbve style folder which the site says, but you will notice on my address bar i have installed mine in the old bve4 folder. so ignore my address bar.

So now then, your going to need to get all the programme and dependancies. and put the in to the folder where the openbve page tells you. you will find that out here.

then once all dependencies are installed your folder should look somewhat like this.

Please not the train editor and viewer ETC are actually other install's for a developer and not a user.

then you should have three folders now saying; Objects, Routes & sounds. like this

now when it comes to downloading routes for bve fro websites they will package their routes in three folders. A route file, and object file and a sound file. ( im hoping you understand they do/ have what they say on the tin) so then you would move each downloaded folder into each folder it needs to go into.

example being this;

1. open and extract the route folder (experiment 1 / Birmingham/ route)
2. do the same for the sound (experiment 1/ Birmingham / sound)
3. and you got it! again for objects (experiment 1 / Birmingham / object)

now move all three out of the "experiment" folders (experiment in this case would be the name of the zipped folders they came in) they came in and move the Birmingham folders into the respective folders.

so now they should look like this ;

route main folder with route file in

sound main folder with sound file in

object main folder with object file in


openbve actually lets you choose and move the train files into any folder you want. so i have a train folder which i would normally put trains into like your told on the install page ( screenshot)

Also please not you drivers NEED to be up-to-date for openbve to run at its best. this programme asks more from your computer in terms of hardware more than FS2004 MSTS ad other games like that.
