Installing activities

Very short rant.

Why the hell should we need to download a 20mb odd file just to install activities? It sort of shows that the product wasn't finished before release!!!

Or, is this perhaps RSDs way of protecting their file format? :roll:

Tom, you don't need to install that file *sigh*, theres a thing inside the game folder called 'Package Manager' use that to install things....

Cant find any scenario in Rail Simulator thats over 1Mb, infact most arent even over 150Kb!

The two on the official site (each including a readme and the Package Manager software to install the scenario) are only 450kb's


So what scenario for Rail Simulator is 20Mb's!!!!!

Just looked on UKT for this 20Mb scenario and found one thats only 2kb's! Still cant find the one you talk of though.

When I first installed Rail Simulator, I had one folder in my Programs menu. This contained:

Uninstall Rail Simulator.lnk

Nowhere does it show where to install activities straight off - nor could I find how with a quick glance of the manual.

In order to install activities from Digital Traction (which seem to be the only ones not on RS.com or UKTS that I could find easily) come in what seems to be an rpl format. Now, in order to install those rpl formats, it appears I have to install the development tools which require assigning yourself to a licence (which contradicts itself) that you may not agree with, simply to install a damn activity. :roll: :roll: :roll:

So I *have* to download an activity from RSD if I want the Package Manager without the dev tools? Could be made more obvious!!! What if I don't want the activities on the site and just the package manager?

To be fair, without a scenario to install, why would you need instructions on installing one? Every scenario supplied by RSDL comes with instructions on installation, which is in actual fact only to double click on one thing. If other vendors choose not to supply instructions that is their choice.

Considering .RPL is not a Rail Simulator associated format, I hardly think its fair to accuse Rail Simulator of being at fault concerning the ease of use of such a file.

If Digital Tractions wish to use THEIR own file formats, there is nothing RSDL should do to stop them. They create content for their own customers as do we.

I am confused as to why Digital Tractions would suggest downloading the full DevTool kit to install a scenario, so you are right to be frustrated. This is certainly not a requirement Rail Simulator has set. It might be worth feeding this back to Digital Tractions.

We have recieved feedback about supplying the Package Manager as a seperate download from www.railsimulator.com, and this is something we do wish to arrange as quickly as possible, so you are correct on this issue, it is not the case at present.

However considering the Package Manager only needs installing once, after obtaining it, there is no requirement to obtain it again.

Er, most people would probably want flexibility beyond the game itself upon installation. I certainly do and TBH, what if I didn't want something from RSDL? Saying that every scenario comes with package manager from RSDL - shouldn't RS just support it from box?

It's RSs file format definately, I may have got the extension wrong, if so my bad, but still, RS should be able to support it from the outset from installation. It would be far more flexible if Package Manager came with the product and one not having to install either the Dev Tools or a RSD endorsed scenario in order to install third party products. It's pathetic.

Digital Tractions did not advise downloading the Tool Kit, however the site does not make it obvious that you only require a package manager, nor does it make it obvious that you have to download an RSD endorsed scenario in order to get it without the dev tools. The dev tools are the most obvious option.

The fact remains that, even though it only needs installing once, it would be better available STAND ALONE and not requiring to download Dev Tools or an RSD endorsed scenario!!!!!

However, concerning other comments on this thread I am confused. Unless RailUK.org has in some way the possibility of gaining from the demise of Rail Simulator or at least in the reduction and prevention of its customer base, is there a reason behind these threads? They serve no real purpose other than to hype up and aggrevate minor teething problems after the launch of a brand new railway simulator.

I mean, its one case to make people aware of issues, but its by far another to go out of your way to ensure Rail Simulator has the worse reputation possible infront of potential new customers.

No intention of making it have a worse reputation than it already has, just whose fault is it that it gained the reputation, certainly not Joe (Guinea Pig) Publics. The comments around the boards in the first couple of weeks did that. Just stating facts now 3 months down the line and issues still not sorted

I look forward to the day when we can have a rave review of RS but fear it may still be a long way off

I wouldn't say a minor teething problem is something such as no TGS in the HST formation, unless you were modelling Grand Central, which you're not. And besides, a lot of forums are showing exactly the same things - perhaps although not as obvious.
