Oddly enough I have a recording of this taken from Leeds of all places.

We were on the Deltic trip returning back from Dundee, when we arrived at Leeds there was a repeated announcement on the platforms on the other side from us which were preceded by several loud "alarm" style tones. The platforms were empty (from what I can remember barring a pair of BTP guys).

I'll dig it out and upload it tomorrow.

It's Mr Brown at the Five Lane End Morrisons near me.

We used to have a bell, later replaced by a very loud buzzer and would use codes for various things.

1 - Someone get on a till and help out
2 - Supervisor / Managment to the tills
3 - Shoplifter
4 - Assault (ahem - civil unrest)
5 + Everyone get the heck onto the shop floor and see what's going on... :D

Personally I used to love hunting shoplifters, once chased one for at least half a mile before "loosing him" only for him to be "returned" to us by a friendly South African fella who used to track wild animals and found the bugger in the woodlands... Another favorite was just following the known suspects around standing about a foot away from them.

When I got promoted it wasn't the same following them on camera :(

Hospitals use a similar system with either Dr (colour) or just Code (colour).

Hospital codes are really only used in US type healthcare models. Round here, pagers and internal mobile phones rendered them pointless.
