Inspector SAMs ?

In Leeds we have a tannoy announcment saying will inspector sans please go to either platform 12 or the main concourse ? On asking 2 seperate bt police officers - one said it is a fictional character and the other says there is a man called this - can anyone confirm this eitherway

That would be Inspector Sands.
Usually an announcement to request staff to investigate a fire alarm or similar incident that can be made over PA without panicing the general public.

If it was a bloke he does a good job of getting to every station in the country for 10am on a tuesday morning.

I was at Kings Cross Thameslink one evening and the "Will Inspector Sands please contact the control room" announcement was playing incessantly. It then suddenly changed to "Will all passengers please evacuate the station immediately" before stopping altogether.

Was this change automatic after a certain time because the fictional Inspector Sands was a bit slow at investigating that fire alert?!

Yes. If it not addressed within 90 seconds then it will go to evac - though this can be over ridden which is why it stopped

If a fire alarm is pushed it announces inspector sands message, if not aknowledged within a set time or if two fire alarms are pushed it will go into evacuation procedure.

Don't know if it's a similar thing but at New Street you get a similarly ambiguous 'Will the station cleaner please contact the Team leader' announcement. I seem to remember there's actually a fair few coded announcements kicking about.

However, how do they test the actual sounders are functioning correctly if this is the fire alarm test.

They will all get routine testing by the Fire alarm company - C&M i think with Kings x.

Though staff will be able to tell if one is not sounding by not hearing it if close by

One place I used to work at this was the coded message on the radios to summon staff and/or security to a staff member being threatened or requiring backup. Presumably the name used would be changed if someone named Ryder actually started working there, as there was no one of that name in the company at the time!

Paddington has Inspector Sands and Tommy Atkins. Tommy Atkins is used to relay a message that cannot be broadcast over the radio network for whatever reason.

I remember hearing that it's the same in theatres. "Mr Sands is in the building" meaning that something is on fire.

The same applies on the Night Riveria, for example there are two coded messages that any of the onboard staff can use but there's only one which only the train manager is permitted to use as it's for emergency purposes only.

I don't know if the same messages are used on the Scottish sleepers though but I would have though they would be the same if not similar.
