Just noticed from the TV listings that this program will contain a report in the train overcrowding in the North West if anyone's interested.

Won't see that where I live. But will be watching this thread to keep track of the obligatory rants about "gutter journalism" "shoddy reporting" "showing a Class XXX at XXXXXX station just sums up how little they know".

These are guaranteed to appear in relation to any programme or article which looks like being even mildly critical of the railway - before it's published/transmitted.

This seems to be particularly the case with programmes about overcrowding. Of which there's been a few, because it's actually a genuine problem.

Can't wait;)

Its on satellite on Astra 28.2 Free To Air, available in Scotland, anyhow one wont know how balanced it is until transmission in my opinion.
As a traveller from Chester to Manchester & return, Arriva Trains Wales are overcrowded, when I use them.

Utter rubbish you clearly haven't researched the forum. :p ;)

I'm hoping the program it will appear afterwards in some form other that allows the rest of us to partake.

It'll certainly be on iPlayer from the same evening.

(Also if you stream live TV online through a service such as Zattoo or TVCatchup I believe you get a chice of regions, unlike the live feed on the BBC's website.)

Yeh but I don't have a TV license and the BBC TVL left a card the other day after visiting for the purposes of entrapment verification and as I don't particularly want to encourage (or engage with) them, it will have to be Iplayer for me.

The West Midlands version did a similar one a couple of years ago that pretty much concentrated only on the Leamington-Birmingham trains run by XC, and ignored any other overcrowding hotspots in the area.

The Office of Rail Regulation does not seem to regard (over)crowding as a particular major issue in trains.

From their website:

http://www.rail-reg.gov.uk/server/show/nav.1335

Only mentions London Commuter trains specifically:

... Where an operator of a London commuter train service exceeds levels of train crowding specified in the franchise contract, DfT can require the operator to produce an action plan for providing more capacity and alleviating overcrowding. ...

Also has this gem:

... But despite being uncomfortable, and at times making passengers feel unsafe, there is no conclusive evidence linking crowding on trains with anything other than low level health and safety risks to individual passengers ...

Well, daft as it may seem you do need a licence to watch BBC live using iPlayer. See :

http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/playing_tv_progs/tvlicence

Watch it a day later and you are fine ( rather than fined :) ), which seems even dafter.

I am pretty certain it would be technically possible, even easy, for the licence checkers to know a particular household is watching programmes live on iPlayer.

And, reading the last part of this page, it suggests that even owning a computer/phone/tablet which is connected to the internet and has a web browser which can run iPlayer requires you to have a licence unless you can prove you have never intended to use iPlayer to watch live BBC TV.

What a crazy world we live in.

Love that last quote. Apart from the fact that passengers are uncomfortable and feel unsafe, everything is just peachy. Apparently as long as nobody actually dies, overcrowding is acceptable.

I can hear a big cheer going up for the ORR from the sardines rammed into Pacers, 150's, 185's and Voyagers all over the country.

Overcrowding is a serious issue in the NW, and the achingly slow processes by which improvement works are completed only make things worse.

My issue is that these programmes focus on Manchester and Liverpool, giving the impression that other services are just fine, or aren't important enough. I've used Southport to Wigan services which are at capacity. I've used Blackpool to Preston services which are at capacity. I've used Liverpool to Wigan services which are at capacity.

And the common factor here? Northern Rail.

I quite agree. Very busy at the peak and increasingly more so. The 1650 out of Piccadilly is mobbed now. I took the 1750 last night and it was standing from Oxford Road to Warrington.

 Please tell me what you'd like Northern to do about this. Like many other things in life, they can only play the cards they are dealt.

You know how you complain that people shout you down when you criticize Northern, have you ever thought it may be because you take every minute, trivial opportunity to do so, and can never really provide any concrete guidance as to what they should (realistically) do?

Indeed NR are stuck with what DFT[or whatever they're called] allow them to use, which is annoying as some NR services could do with doubling or on some services trebling of carriages. Liverpool to Blackpool North is regully heaving really needs 4 & sometimes 6 carriage units rather than 2 carriages used at the mo.

TVL or the Company that represents them, have a list of all known addresses with no license, it is the property that is licensed and not the individual, any equipment with capabilities of receiving tv transmissions, when bought will have the address passed on to TVL, some in the know give a false address with a known TV license. like Daddy.

The Company that has the TVL contract gets a bonus for all of those properties found not to have a license, yet watch live tv. You will have to prove to TVL you watch after transmission & your computer ,if seen can be requested to be checked for its hard drive, say no and ask for problems.

The simple answer is Class 319s after NW electrification (and a big shuffle round of DMUs afterwards).
Not much NT can do beforehand.

There are TPE services that are equally rammed, the 1846 from Piccadilly- Blackpool North or 1316 to Edinburgh for instance.

Sorry, but I don't think that's right. As far as I'm aware a TV Licensing inspector has no more right to look through your computer hard drive (or indeed any part of your property) than I do. The onus is on TVL to prove you are watching telly without a licence, not you to prove you're not.

Actually its for Capita (contracted by TVL which is a brand of the BBC) to prove that I am watching live TV and thus committing an offence. They can not enter into or insist on access to anything inside my property without a court order, and to get one of those they need to demonstrate to a magistrate that they have reasonable suspicion that live (or almost live) television is being watched. If they want to inspect my hard drives good luck to them - they are encrypted with 256bit AES LUKS/ Truecrypt with strong passwords.

As I understand it you are correct.

I don't want to carry on off topic but this is one of a number of sites detailing issues with TVL.

Also the Saturday 1811 Scarboro' out of Piccadilly appears rammed all the way to Leeds. This at a time when 3 lightly loaded trains left for Manchester Airport within a few minutes of each other.

I think that its the same theme on Inside Out in every region next Monday - certainly is in the London area. So there's quite a lot of downloading onto i-Player to be done!

I also am aware of Capitas style, we both are o fey with what can occur, but many when challenged are not, playing hard with Capita people can result in problems, many are ex Statutory people with contacts on commission
Many visits by Capita are a result of tip offs. I have always bought a license for my home has I always buy a rail ticket to travel.
Best of luck.

Well I can guarantee there has been no tip off in this case as I haven't watched any TV, just ignored their threat-o-grams.

I object to the mantra that you must by a licence even if you don't need one and if they want to come in they can either get a court order or commit criminal damage doing so!

To be honest I was in when they called but didn't here them and found their card lying outside the front door - they hadn't even bothered to put it through the letter box so I'm not sure their really that bothered about me. :)

Why dont you just pay your license fee? Be a good citizen. It will cost you more in the end but you will be the 'victim'.

Perhaps because I don't need one?

Well its up to you,It is difficult in this computer age to argue one does not have the means of receiving live tv, when you have an Internet connection & computer
In my opinion ignoring the letters, will most certainly guarantee a visit. My comment about tip off's is more related to TVs,
again best of luck.
