Having taken a different route this morning due to delays I was surprised to hear the driver of the train to Victoria explain not only why the train is late but also why he was driving slowly - due to the rails being slippery, and not because he wanted to annoy all the passengers!

Much better than the usual "poor rail conditions"

The train in question set off from Gillingham at 0650

Don't the guards get annoyed if the driver makes announcement while they are still on board the train?

Depends on the guard if I'm honest pal. If I am with a guard and they haven't announced a delay (normally can be pre empted) I'll announce it myself

Good to see......I was quite impressed with a Metrolink driver the other day doing that after a infrastructure issue near Altrincham impacted on services....

Sometimes they do, I will make an announcement if at a stand for more than 3 or so minutes this saves having to buzz the guard up and explain to them what the problem is. Most of the guards are quite happy with this but some think it is their job to make announcements but in reality I think that guard and driver are a team and if the driver can assist the guard for whatever reason they should be grateful :)

Speaking of guard/driver relations - do drivers have no way to contact the guard other than using the "Can the guard please contact the driver" PA call? I understand that the guard could be anywhere on the train, but I'm surprised that police-style walkie talkies aren't used. Also, I'm only familiar with how SWT does things - does it vary based on TOC or train stock?
