Info request: good photo location along Gloucester-Worcester line?

I'm hoping for advice, from a resident RailUKForums expert


I want to take shots of the "Welsh Marches" tour, Saturday 16th May, for the leg being hauled by the pair of Tyseley-based Castles.

My first photo-stop is on Llanvihangel Summit; and I'm thinking of catching a second photo-stop somewhere along the Gloucester-Worcester line.

I'm not familiar with those parts; and googling hasn't produced any obvious photogenic spots.


So, if you know the area and the line, please let me know where your favourite photographic locations are on this stretch of track. Many thanks.

Abbotswood Junction can be good for afternoon shots of northbound trains though I've only ever used it for short trains:-

Go for that shot at Tredington as Ferret says. If it is sunny, you won't get a better northbound shot.

Plausible excuse to dear heart, that I'm "popping out for the morning papers and it may take a while" - hmmmmmm....


Update to this post - the Vintage Train's site advises that the tour will have an hour's layover at Gloucester. Which, by my reckoning and the national speed limit, means I can shoot the Castles at Llanvihangel Summit, then motor southwards and catch them emerging from the eastern end of Patchway Tunnel, before scooting up to Tewkesbury and Tredington Crossing. Quality arrangement!

There's quite a bit of parking at Treddington,both sides of the crossing,although it can get very busy when there's a special about.Having said that,the road isn't that busy.

I think you'll find this tour will be coming along the Severn estuary via Lydney, so if you go to Patchway you'll miss the shot!

Thanks, Bill. Earlier today, I logged onto UK Steam Info, saw the itinerary and thought: "Ah..."

Rather than Patchway Tunnel, I'll try a spot off the A48, near Lydney.

Well what a fickle Mistress the ol' spring weather is, eh...

The Castles were bathed in bright sunlight, as the train crested Llanvihangel Summit; and they were barely breaking sweat up the gradient.

By the time I caught them along the Severn Estuary, I was soaked to the skin and cursing the heavens... Still, thank goodness for fairly waterproof camera equipment (my trusty Eos 1V has had far worse thrown at it...).

As the rain squalls were moving northeast, I binned the idea of more shots.

It's on Fuji Acros monchrome film, so I'll add shots once I've developed the film and scanned the negs. Which may be a while....
