Have just returned from a short spell in north-west England, including time spent on the Cumbrian Coast line. This was in company with a friend, whose primary interest was to photograph the passenger workings on this route, powered by class 37 diesel locos.

Am looking at putting together a brief piece on this trip, for this sub-forum. However: I largely "live in the past", and my knowledge of and interest in the equipment of Britain's modern-day rail system, are definitely limited. My abovementioned friend's strong interest is in locomotives -- far less so, in coaching or dmu stock.

I'm hoping that some kind person might help me out, here. Can someone tell me, what is the "class designation" or equivalent, of the "Direct Rail" coaches which run with "37" power on the Cumbrian Coast line; and the designation of the dmu types which operate the majority of the passenger services on this route? (To me, they're just "dmus" -- I wrote down the numbers borne by a couple of them, but to me these were basically, just meaningless numbers.)

Would be very grateful for assistance with the above matters.

Did you note the cab end numbers on the DMUs, or the side numbers? If the former, the first three digits are the class number and the final three the individual unit number.

You and your friend presumably noticed the class 68s that have replaced one 37 diagram.
The only thing to add to the Wikipedia list is that Barrow also sees 185s (on hire to Northern from TPE) and 158s.

68s indeed seen: friend - a rather "focused" guy, shall we say -- only marginally noticed those: 37s were what he was intent on. Interesting to find (something we hadn't known earlier): the 37 diagram involves a 37 and four coaches, working push-and-pull fashion (loco at north end of train, throughout diagram) -- a photographic disappointment for my friend, who from photter's point of view, wants "loco in front". 68-worked trains featured, we found, a 68 at each end of train -- as was the set-up in January this year on the "Wherry Lines" in Norfolk -- there, 37s "top-and-tail". I have to admit that I'm glad I'm not a photographer :'( .
