Middlesborough!

There's a reason they're called the "smoggies"! The whole Teesside area is rife with chemical plants, cooling towers and all the related industrial paraphernalia. I would suggest a journey around the Tees estuary from Hartlepool to Redcar via Middlesborough. Although not nearly as industrialised as it was perhaps 15 years ago, it still displays the "cream" of remaining north east industry. There's also the steelworks at Redcar, check it out before they probably level half the site, given the recent job losses there. It's not my cup of tea, but that's probably because I grew up around that area!
There's also the nuclear power station visible on the seaward side at Hartlepool, and the now sadly bare remants of Thornaby TMD on the left on the approach to Middlesborough: Unfortunately the depot is no longer full of class 56s and 60s as it was even 10 years ago

Rugeley Power Station is alongside the WCML on the Trent Valley line, but that's on the west side. And the ECML between Doncaster and York is virtually "hemmed in" by power stations; with Drax to the East, and Eggborough and Ferrybridge on the West.
I must admit that given the right lighting, the massive cooling towers of a power station can look pretty impressive belching clouds of steam. I've nicknamed them "cloud factories" thanks to this attribute!

I took a couple of photos from a train on the Birmingham-Derby line one particularly clear, cold morning of Ratcliffe on Soar power station living up to this nickname, when the cool conditions meant that the clouds of condensing steam were visible from at least 15 miles away! (Ratcliffe on Soar PS is the one next door to East Midlands Parkway station)
