Increased risk travelling North or South?

A push-pull set with the loco at the rear is arguably more risky than a MU set, because if the front part derails or hits something it will decelerate rapidly and the momentum of the loco sets up a compressive force through the train. However, as stated by others, these types of accident are very rare and the consequences of each are down to a wide range of essentially random factors.

I always sit at the back of a train in case of accidents. This just blows that theory right out of the water!!

My late mother always insisted on riding in the middle of the train
So that if you get hit from front or back you have a better chance
she had logic for everything

My first class 91 ride was in a mark 3 coach with a class 43 powering at the other end. From Leeds to Wakefield Westgate.
