Hi all, i have been shortlisted for interview for Incident Controller role for Network rail- Basingstoke ROC. Competency based interview. Just wondering if anyone has some tips or knowledge of that particular role for the interview? I have loads of incident control room experience, but obviously as with any interview you need to showcase your skills and experience in depth.

Have you worked for network rail previously? The interviewer is mandated to ask you some safety and diversity questions so make sure you know the stance on both.

The rest are likely to be situational explanations where the STAR technique is advised. Things like "tell me about a time you solved a problem under pressure"

I'd expect questions about priortisation under pressure and competing demands, clarity of communication, attention to detail and so on. If you have lots of incident control experience, that will put you in a good position but just ensure the answers are developed under the STAR method.

I'd also expect NR standard questions on safety and diversity as well as possibly some specific knowledge about the route you are applying to.

A couple of things worth thinking about:

- the role is largely about managing infrastructure faults and safety issues, think about how you would relate these back to the passenger and how your actions and decisions could impact how a passenger feels

- managing teams and setting expectations are critically important in the role - how would you challenge/escalate if a team isn't providing you with adequate information (as you will be supply this to the TOC who informs passengers) when fixing a fault? Have a look into 'Time to site/Time to fix' or drop me a message about this

- Understanding software such as Fault Management System, Control Centre Incident Log, Tyrell etc would be beneficial

- Understand how NR uses a command structure would be useful - the JESIP website (Joint Emergency Service Interoperatability Protocol) would be useful

- Wessex Route geography and operators would be really useful to demonstrate - it's a typical question in a Control interview to describe the Control's area of operations and the train operators within it.
