Currently sitting on a stationary train in Bristol.

According to national rail:
Emergency services are dealing with an incident between Cardiff Central and Newport.

Anybody know what's happened?

@K8E5 apologies, this is a major line closure and we are dealing with lots of cancellations and amendments. Apologies for the frustration.

Really sorry to passengers at Cardiff Central and Newport. Line currently closed whilst emergency services make safety checks near railway

Thank you for a quick reply.

Lines must have reopened as I posed. Thank goodness that the 60 minute delays suggested haven't happened!
Although now stopped at STJ!

Guard has just told us that there is a large amount of explosives near the railway line. Train now terminating in Newport!

Lines are apparently open for real this time. Train is still terminating at Newport though. (Thankfully my stop on it!)

Ethanol apparently ala bbc

The BBC article is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-20175140

Fortunately, it looks like injury was prevented.

Whilst ethanol, like most other chemicals, can be dangerous if mishandled, the incident could have been far worse with a more volatile (to use the term colloquially) substance.

Fire service 1 - Freightliner 0 (reminds me of a Class 70 :P )

From ITN News:

'BRITISH TRANSPORT POLICE STATEMENT'

'A gas container at the depot was overfilled with ethanol, and there are concerns this may lead to the container exploding.

A cordon has been put in place around the depot and the railway line between Cardiff and Newport has been suspended, trains in the surrounding area are therefore likely to be subjected to extensive delays'

http://www.itv.com/news/wales/2012-11-01/south-wales-rail-services-suspended-after-chemical-leak/

Ethanol (not being a gas) is less 'explosive' than some chemicals, nonetheless no doubt quite tricky.

(It seems that BBC are ahead if ITN!!)
