BBC Radio Berkshire was saying this evening that there was an incident at Reading West which had closed the line to the west, and also Basingstoke-Reading and 'local trains' (presumably down to Bedwyn). Trains were being diverted 'via Swindon'. So does that mean that X-Country were sent by Didcot west curve, then Swindon to Salisbury?

Should never have got rid of the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton!

CrossCountry made use of the Reading West Curve, however most of their services were held to allow them to serve Reading once the line had reopened (from the North they were put onto the bays and from the South they were held south of Southcote). Being hourly they weren't too badly affected - just a number of services incurring some delays.

First Great Western suspended the Reading to Basingstoke line in it's entirety and the Berks & Hants route between Reading and Theale. A local shuttle ran between Theale and Newbury (instead of the usual Reading to Newbury), with the high-speed services operating via Swindon.

A fatality at Reading West saw a couple of unusual moves this afternoon. 2K73 16:12 Newbury - Reading turbo was held at the signal east of Theale station. Control then reversed it into the London platform and returned in service to Newbury using the Up/Down crossover west of the station. At Newbury Racecourse the Turbo used the down loop as the Down main was occupied by an up train - 1J93 15:19 Taunton - Paddington (up main occupied by 1A92). 1J93 had been forced to move from its holding point at Newbury to allow a following service to detrain, so it went Up Main / Down Main / Racecourse Staion / Up Main (once trains were moving again).

Rare track gen? I went 'Up' the Down Fast with a service train at Woking the other day, even stopped at Platform 4

Is it officially reversible? Rather like the two Up and the northernmost Down between Battledown and Basingstoke.
I believe all through platforms at Woking are reversible (both fasts are at least). There's a 00:40 Woking to Alton train each weekday evening that departs from platform 2 (the up fast) which is the opposite to the move described by TheSlash above. I also remember seeing a down train use platform 2 when the down slow was blocked by a failed unit and the down fast was occupied.

Dont go that way very often these days but I'm pretty sure that Up departures from Platform 4 at Woking were pretty common even in "greyhound" days.
Of course if you have reversible working you need to have reversible workings to maintain route knowledge. Some of the overnight workings to Brighton spend more time on the Up than the Down and then go via Lewes as well!

If you can find out which (if any) do go via Lewes, please let me know as I may be on some overnight moves down that way in November so as to scoop Voyagers on that part of the network before they finish serving Brighton.

When I used the 0512 from Guildford to Woking a few weeks back, that arrived on P4, allowing cross platform interchange with a train from Basingstoke on P2. (The train from Guidlford, (formed of a 444) continued as a stopper to Waterloo, while the train from Basingstoke (formed of 450s) ran fast(ish) to Waterloo, via East Putney).

I've also been on a Down train from Waterloo that ran through P2, as well as using the 0040 to Alton many a time.

I don't think I've ever gone the wrong way through platforms 1 and 5 though.

No doubt easier to cop that track on that train than trying the 0042 off Waterloo, never done it on that yet, tried 4 times now and I'm sick of it.

Not when I've done it. Either the 0042 or 0105 always features in overnight moves around London (well, except for when I was there in August, couldn't be bothered that time) and never produces.<(
