Incident at Gloucester

Reports of an incident involving a Dangerous Goods Train at Gloucester. I believe it is an oil train. Smoke was reported coming from it and all lines are blocked.

Anyone for XC services are advised to travel via Reading or Didcot to travel North. Buses en route.

That'll be because of the derailment the other day. This is a separate incident that's resulted in a temporary shutdown of the whole area (trains are unable to run between Cheltenham and Bristol Parkway as well as Gloucester).

Emergency services have been dealing with this fire. FGW now providing said buses as most trains are indeed at a stand. 1 of the 2 available lines at the location has just reopened.

Yes it is indeed a separate incident. Fire Brigade is en route. People from Birmingham for South Wales were originally meant to change at Bristol Parkway. However given that no trains can run south of Cheltenham it looks like it's either go through Reading or go to Cheltenham for a bus to Bristol Parkway and then train onwards. Either way, if it's going to be an ongoing problem that's quite a journey time extension.

Both lines should be re-opening soon. Affected train is to be moved out of the way slowly.

XC passengers are advised they can now get direct trains to/from Bristol/Birmingham. Significant delays in area however.

Slower than a bus from Cheltenham Spa to Bristol Parkway then another train? I'd have to be convinced it was an awful lot slower in order to go through that faff. Looks like it's a moot point now, anyhow, if services are restored south of Cheltenham Spa.

I think he might have been referring to me when I said I virtually never go that way. Reason because it's slower than other routes. I'd have thought though that from Birmingham this route would probably be quicker than changing for trains and buses.

It's 2h40m Birmingham-Cardiff every hour via Hereford.
You'd be hard pressed to beat that via Didcot or Reading.
And the scenery's better...

In as much as it remains uncertain, because without knowing some precise journey experiences, we don't know how long it took people diverted by bus/Bristol parkway (which was the route I thought was being compared) in order to compare them with the alternatives. Those now getting on their way probably won't look at such alternatives.

But it is cheaper, One reason why I am going that way tommorow on my way to Birmingham
