2U12 1756 Victoria to Dartford was incident service.

Seems shoe gear at rear left of front unit began heavily sparking on approach to Denmark Hill, probably around Cambria Jn. Everyone off and out safely.

Line now open, but Denmark Hill station closed.

I see their first instinct was to film it rather than get away from the 'fire'!

So that's now two similar instances with Southeastern units in a month.

Nothing really to do with Southeastern though (if it was another blown pot).

Unit has a fair bit of scorching and blackening up its side.

Rather interesting response isn't it! If that were me I'd be moving away from the area as a priority and then attempting to alert the train crew to the issue not filming it!

Is Denmark Hill a route out of Charing X?

No, Blackfriars and Victoria. It's also affecting London Overground East London Line services on the Highbury & Islington to Clapham Junction/Crystal Palace diagram.

Are pots meant to be replaced on a schedule or on how many hours the 3rd rail has been energised for since they where replaced?

In the fourth video you hear the automated (and quite grumpy) robot woman say they're now approaching Denmark Hill - so if someone pulled the emergency alarm at that point wouldn't they have stopped the train at the platform (rather than immediately before it) anyway?

Depends on the train. Modern stuff will alert the driver and either not apply the brakes at all or let them override any brake application (for instance because they're about to arrive in a station or it would be unsafe to stop like in a tunnel). Older stuff will just throw the anchors out the back and no-one can stop it.

But note I said 'alert' not 'pull the alarm' ;)

I havn't been able to see the vids so can't really comment on the action of people on train or platform. However when I used to use this service at peak times a couple of years ago it was horribly overcrowded - one of the worst in London and not helped by SE using short trains and lacking stock all round (which this wont help at all). Really uncomfortable and bad for the many hospital users nearby. If still the same today then people would have nowhere in the train to move to.

The station was similarly awful, though I'm presuming the new stairs would alleviate that.

I was affected by this today - got on train 2E09, intending to travel from Blackfriars to Catford.

Upon leaving the Elephant, the driver made an announcement apologising to passengers who had boarded at Elephant - we had to wait whilst dozens of people transferred from platform 4 to 2 - it seems they were not aware of the change of platform. He made a point of saying he didn't know why we had been routed onto a different line.

5 minutes later, he made another announcement. With a touch of irritation, he said he now knew why we had been rerouted - there was a fire at Denmark Hill. However, this had not been communicated to him before departure from the Elephant. So the train was diverted, stopping at Herne Hill and Beckenham Junction instead of the Catford Loop. He was quite apologetic about it and even tried to help out with bus information to the missed stations - good man.

Upon arrival at Beckenham Junction, I saw two Class 37s pulling the nuclear waste train. It was comical what happened next - there was a long traffic jam caused by a 54 sitting in a bus stop around 200 or so metres from the station. The 54 is usually quite empty at this point. However, it became apparent than the 120 or so people who got off the train all had the same idea of running down the road for this bus. I got on, but many were left behind.

The 54 serves Beckenham Hill, Bellingham and Catford. Ticket acceptance seemed to be sorted, which was good. There was a 354 right behind which serves Ravensbourne, but nobody wanted it!

And have you ever tried evacuating a train when people won't leave their bloody luggage behind.

I don't think we can really assess the problem or make any assumptions until the Metro's disgusted rail commuters newsdesk has issued a press release.

Patience and refrain people.

I understand about the filming/getting away argument but it's a hard one as without people filming what happens, it makes the aftermath much harder to establish events.
But then there is the safety aspect and the fact people would rather film than help someone injured.
The biggest bug bear is people filming vertically instead of horizontally. Most people have widescreen TVs these days... think about what that looks like...

Quote below from the BBC News web site ;

"London Fire Brigade said the fire affected eight carriages and one electrical box was damaged. There were no reports of injuries.

Cosmin Suttu, who was on board, said: "I saw big flames from the train window.

"When the train stopped at Denmark Hill station I saw more flames."

So, LFB claims EIGHT coaches affected by fire - really?? Wasn't it just that the train was an eight coach formation but only one bogie was actually affected? Then there are people who can't tell sparks from "big flames"!

It's common practice nowadays whenever there is any sort of incident people have their phones out filming, I can't see any problem as long as people don't take ridiculous risks

Seems a damaged shoe gear on carriage (from memory) 65872 of 465176 was the cause. No idea what led to the damage yet though. Unit was sat outside Grove Park this morning.
