Will hazard a guess that the 142 was put into Platform 4a then, a normal practice when a service is sitting in or departing Platform 4. A few times I have been on services that have near enough gone in to full service in order to stop before the signal that protects Platform 4. Of course, I am purely speculating, but I would bet my grandmother this was the case.

Is it not that case that a train should not be allowed to enter an occupied Platform with the exit signal from the Platform cleared?

Notice how the only injured people were those on the Pacer?

Not knowing the layout at Darlington, but would assume that permission was given for the pacer to enter the platform via signal and it probably didn't stop in time. (Greasy rails, poor braking, brake failure)

Because if the unit had been a Signal Passed At Danger (SPAD) it would have been national news

I would be interested to hear the outcome of this, I have been retired for 2 years I know the Layout at Darlington, unless the rules have changed ( which I doubt) there is no way that a train is allowed to enter a platform at the same time as a train is departing.

It was national news but because no one was killed or seriously injured it was forgotten about quickly.

Passengers dont tend to travel in a DVT and the Pacer was arriving into the station with people most likely standing to get off once it stopped. The report does however say that injuries were 'whiplash' possibly for the benefit of insurance claims dished out by ambulance chasing law firms.

What you have is a platform 4 and 4a. For anyone that isn't familiar, it is hard to describe but it can sort of be seen from this screenshot from my RS/RW route.

To the left of the shot is the shadow of the signal and gantry that protects platform 4 from 4a. The NXEC HST is in platform 4 and the Northern Rail service would stop at 4a, covered by that signal.

Of course, this is guesswork, but having travelled on the said service many many times, probably 8/10 times this is the scenario. Not sure on the weather conditions for the day so who knows what happened but as mentioned above, I have seen various times where the Northern service has had to heave the brakes on to stop.

If anyone would like a more detailed shot showing the layout, just ask.
