Inappropriate geographical names

'Mottram Yard' on the Woodhead route was at least three miles from Mottram and was situated in what I would call Gamesley and nearer to Dinting, Charlesworth or Broadbottom.

Some stations have changed their names to reflect their true location. I'm sure there's one between Cambridge and Kings Lynn though I can't remember the name; and I'm sure Gilberdyke in Yorkshire East Riding was called something else.

Any other, perhaps more modern examples?

You mean Watlington (formerly known as Magdalen Road)...? If so you have it the wrong way around. It would be better known by it's former name (even though it was originally known as Watlington when built) as it is some distance from the village of Watlington itself.

Dent station should have been Dentdale station. Having said that, Cowgill would have been better but who's heard of Cowgill!

There are a lot of stations which are sited in villages with different names and here are a few from the South East-
Knockholt- nearest village is Pratts Bottom. Knockholt is about 2 miles away.
Wivelsfield station is in Worlds End area of Burgess Hill (Wivelsfield is a mile and a half away)
Penshurst station is in Chiddingstone Causeway (Penshurst is a good 2 miles away)
Frant station is in Bells Yew Green (Frant is about a mile and half away)
Wadhurst station is in the hamlet of Rock Robin and the next village is Durgates with Wadhurst village being nearly 2 miles from the station.
Edenbridge station is actually in Marlpit Hill.
Ebbsfleet International- There is no place called "Ebbsfleet" It is actually situated on the outskirts of Northfleet and Gravesend

Smitham station was only recently renamed Coulsdon Town as is it is in the centre of Coulsdon and the name of Smitham has disappeared over the years.

Lapworth railway station (half way between Solihull & Warwick) is in the village of Kingswood, Warwickshire with Lapworth being a couple of miles down the road.
The station used to be called Kingswood, but they changed it to Lapworth about a hundred years ago to avoid confusion with Kingswood station in Surrey.

Glenrothes with Thornton is bizarre and misleading. It should be "Thornton for Glenrothes" surely?

Markinch is nearer Glenrothes, so by their strange logic that could be "Glenrothes with Markinch"!

It's the only station I know of which is named in such a bizarre way.

Hemel Hempstead is in Boxmoor, which is of the same status and arguably bigger catchment than Apsley.

If not HH North and HH South, then surely Boxmoor and Apsley instead.

Seamer station isn't in Seamer which is a mile or so away, it's in Crossgates but there is another Cross Gates on the outskirts of Leeds hence the name.

I think that Markinch used to be "for Glenrothes" but just became "Markinch" when the station was opened at Thornton.

One example that crops up is Nelson, where the town (fka Marsden?) was named after the railway station (rather than the other way round)

Witley station on the Portsmouth direct line, station in Wormley village, originally named Witley and (or for) Chiddingfold. But serves the villages of Hambledon and Brook as well!

Ammanford station on the Central wales Line was originally called Dyffryn (not sure why, maybe a nearby farm?) then Tirydail, then Ammanford and tirydail and most recently just Ammanford. the station is actually in the part of Ammanford called Tirydail but took the name Ammanford after the actually station of Ammanford on The Brynaman branch closed although it was some years after the closure that it was renamed. Until it closed in the 80s though the signal box always bore the name Tirydail. Confusing

Lyndhurst Road became Ashurst (New Forest) in 1997, sensible really because Ashurst is quite a sizeable village and the station's right in the middle of it.

Essex Road in London is on Essex Road.
London Road (Guildford) is just off London Road in Guildford.
Angel Road is next to Angel Road (if you can find your way in the station that is).
Beaulieu Road is on Beaulieu Road (well, they couldnt really call it anything else).
Blackhorse Road is on Blackhorse Road.
Chester Road is on Chester Road.

Yeovil Junction is miles out of Yeovil meaning you have to get a bus for about 2 miles before you get into Yeovil itself. It's near the village of Stoford. Yeovil Pen Mill Station however is actually in Yeovil but is on a different line and annoyingly they don't link up at all, even though there's a line between the two lines! Infuriating.

Harlesden is more Harlesden North and Willesden Junction is closer to the centre of Harlesden and miles from Willesden.

The Level Crossing in Sherburn near Seamer / Scarborough is called Weaverthorpe which is actually about 5 miles South and in the next but one valley.
This to avoid confusion, when it was a station, with the other Sherburn (In Elmet ) nearer to Leeds

Alfreton and Mansfield Parkway was pretty far from mansfield

Sluts Hole level crossing in Norfolk is a particular favourite for being inappropriate.

Berkswell should be Balsall Common.

It's slightly nearer Berkswell than Balsall, but Berkswell and Balsall would be a better name.

Just down the line, Canley is at the extreme eastern edge of what I'd call Canley, and the parts of Canley round Charter Avenue, where I once regrettably lived, are nearer Tile Hill station. I'd call it Hearsall Common (or Canley Road, being as that's its address...).
