IMR levers

With the Putney Bridge one, if one of the levers was swung to the left it would be very close to its immediate neighbour if swung to the right. Perhaps they made them three-tier because after experience with two-tier they found it a bit easier to operate one without knocking the next one out of place?

I think the photo makes them look closer than they are having seen the frame at the Acton museum. Hopefully someone with technical knowledge will come along and explain.

I seem to remember that it was all to do with relays or associated but don't ask any more as I'm not a tech person. There were at least 42 IMRs like this some having more than 12 levers.

There is a web-site that gives details of the Westinghouse L frame and its derivatives, including the V frame:

This has photos of three V frames. The two small ones, Parsons Green and Kennington, have levers in two rows, while the larger Wembley one has the levers in three rows, like the Earls Court frame. The original patent application shows the levers in two rows.

I suspect that it might be the frames with the greater number of levers that had the levers in 3 rows. With a 12-lever frame, someone standing in the middle would near-enough be standing directly in front of all the levers, but the larger the frame gets, the more oblique an angle you are operating the outer levers. Having the levers spaced further apart would make it less likely that your hand would accidentally come into contact with the adjacent lever, particularly when reaching for one of the outermost levers.

There were considerably more than 42 such frames in use on LT - the web-site lists 91. Here is a direct link to the list (unfortunately the pull-down menus on the website have an error in accessing the list):

Thanks for that I was also thinking there were more than 42. It must be to do with the size of frame.

If you look at my post (4) what I meant was that there were 42 V frames with the arrangement of 2 levers, there are a lot more V frames. On the Northern line they are still in situ other than Kennnington which was removed because of the work on passageways. All the Vic line ones have been removed just empty rooms.

Thanks for the update and that is interesting about the frames still being there I wonder if it would be possible to visit them, who would I contact at TfL.
