Improvements to Electronic Display Boards

This has happened to me twice recently - arrived at an unfamiliar station to find my train cancelled. I need to know which train I can catch that stops at [Sheffield], but the destination boards on the platforms only show the final destination, you have to go to the platform to see where the train calls, which is OK if you know the platform from which the train you don't know you want is stopping.

The large board in the concourse at Manchester Piccadilly is the only one I've seen that lists all stations, final and intermediate, in alphabetical order showing platform and time. I'm sure I saw some terminals at Birmingham New Street where you entered your destination and it showed details of the next few trains. Better still if you get a printout on a tally roll.

The Manchester Piccadilly screens are the best I've seen in the UK. I can imagine versions of them could easily be installed at other stations work some imagination.

"Next fastest train to X" displays are provided at lots of stations. I think they're best in conjunction with traditional vertical format boards rather than replacing them as they do at Picc, though.

There's an interactive screen at the John Lewis entrance at New St that lets you search train services. No reason it couldn't be rolled out to more places.

The screen at Leeds is another example; it has the advantage of being inside the barriers (I suspect this is more important at Leeds than Manchester) but as a result it adds to congestion there. I also find the text on the small side, but that's a function of the limited space available.

Woking station has a couple of large boards which tell you the next fastest train to various places. Being Woking, these boards are quite large with quite a few destinations to display! However, these are in the sort of ticket office area, and not on the platforms. But gets such a regular train service to places (e.g. London) that it's not too bad if you miss a train.

Yes, very good now they have changed them - when introduced there were two displays of ~ half the stations but instead of being fixed they each scrolled to the other half - just as you had located Sheffield on the screen it would change to Macclesfield .
