Yesterday we were on the delayed 12:30 HST from Edinburgh Waverly to London Kings Cross. The train had lost time coming down from Aberdeen as the front power car had failed.

They decided to hold the train for a short while to see if the fitter could sort the problem, which he did in about 5mins. Then at Newcastle they held a KX train so people on ours who wanted to go to Doncaster, Peterborough and places not served by ours could get onto using cross platform access.

But the most impressive thing was at KX, when we got off the train there was an army of cleaners and people going along with new seat reservations, after taking a couple of photos of both power cars when we got to the barriers they were already calling people to the train we had got off as it was due to go to Harrogate within 8 mins of our delayed arrival.

A big well done to East Coast as I couldn't see it leaving anywhere near on time, or clean, but it did.

The only downside was our train was 29mins late into KX, so no half refund

That's excellent stuff, and absolutely how it should be. You always get a measure of a company from how they cope when things go wrong!

I'm sure you'll be glad to know the train officially arrived 34 late on the booked working timetable, but a generous public differential on arrival times brought the public delay (ie the one they have to pay out for) down to 28 publicly. Which is nice for them.
