That's amazing. 
Looks like some form of strength testing to see how the tank copes with a vacuum.

It was done with steam; it was filled with hot steam, the valves and the vents were closed, so when the steam condensed there was a huge pressure drop inside and it got crushed by the atmospheric pressure outside
