At the time it was built it was Britain's most powerful diesel loco.
It's two unique features were it's wheel configuration (2 unpowered axles followed by 4 powered axles followed by 2 more unpowered axles) and it's transmission. Rather than having a gearbox 'changing gear' was accomplished by connecting or disconnection on of it's 4 engines to the trnasmission.

And as for being one of the less aesthetically pleasing classes:

I seem to recall reading it also had two further AEC engines, just to drive the superchargers for the main engines.
i can only surmise that they must have used a strong brand of glue in the Derby drawing office.

I think you're right, they were much less powerful than the main engines. The Fell is definitely one of weirdest locos Britain has ever come up with.

Another from me then!

A fairly small class of units, they can be seen in several mostly waterside locations. Part of a family to have been introduced not earlier than 1970 and still in service, these units have a nickname which can be attributed to several factors. Lastly, the entire family of units has no classes whose digits' totals exceed 15.

I'm going to say 442, which were mostly ran to seaside destinations, and add up, numerologically, to 10.

Not the 442. Although they ran and run to the seaside, a sizeable amount of the journey is some distance away - and the Gatwick Express doesn't exactly reach the sea either. (Mostly.)

Your "punt" is a good one! The 143 is the correct answer. They are usually found only within 20 miles or so of the Severn Estuary, but on either side, are in a family whose highest "sum" is nine (1+4+4), and of course they are nicknamed Nodding Donkeys for several different reasons.
