1) We were built by two different builders
2) During our production run some of us were used for experimentation
3) We appear/appeared all over the network.

Might be easy this or hard, I can't really tell!

I'm thinking one of two, and I'm going to say the locomotive illustrated in your avatar.

Also clarification the class still exists but is not used on the mainline in any capacity.

Nym for the love of god the last time I studied chemistry was five years ago and physics was three years ago! I'm flipping historian not a scientist!

However if you're asking whether it's powered by diesel, coal, or electrikery then I would say that so far no one has named a class that is powered by the same fuel as the class I'm thinking of.

No to the above, yes they were built they were a class of 14 units.

Can't be 07xxx since some where delivered via NR Metals
Can't be the HX Units because they run on NR into Paddington
Can't be the 373/3 units since they have run for GNER...

So I'm sticking with the 99xxx fleet...

We have a winner class 99. As we know these were train ferries, but due to the limitations of the tops computer system they were as far as tops was concerned locomotives.

OK, I'm a class of train where the drive system is said to make 'funny noises' and where wanted to work near where they where built but budget cuts meant the order didn't go through for it's home area.

Make it easier with a bit more of a clue, the same drive system is used elsewhere, but not used on anything new in the form it formally was...

The type of drive it uses is now seen as obsilite and was as such in 1996 when the last stock on UK rails that used it was 'introduced'.

If you think funny noises, what immediately comes to mind is a 323.

I think that might be right because there was a proposal to order more 323s for the Leeds local electrification but they got 332s instead after having to use secondhand 308s for a while didn't they?

They got 333s, the 332s are the Heathrow units. Granted they are near identical but still on a thread specifically about train classes I feel it wise to be clear

323 is correct, the funny noise is beacuse of the switching frequency of the GTO Thyistors used in the drive system for the three phase motors.

Bonus points if you can tell me the last stock introduced in the UK to use it, and what replaced it...
