I'm thinking of a train class..

I can see where you're coming from, but no. Although the 415 was localised, there were just too many to consider it a "rare sight overall". Also, I'm not sure about the unusual feature bit?

It was a guess from the doors, with no other thought put into it

Fair enough 90019 ;)

Two points. 1, I need a specific class; 2, who doesn't like Thumpers? Don't let 4SRKT see that!

A rather useless clue: There is a clue out there, relating to the enthusiast clue, that would give it away.

You wouldn't be describing the two Bulleid 4-DD units would you?;)

Unique - double decker.

Common where used; rare elsewhere - ran mainly on one route only and occasionally on one other route connected to the first because they were overheight for other routes.

I would not. The class in question is more common that that! But the class is or was not exactly... abundant, unless of course you live(d) in one of several certain metropolitan areas. (There you go; a clue.)

Not the 501. This fails the clue about the following TOPS class being relatively rare, when 502s were fairly numerous...

The 504 certainly was quite rare! However, the 503 is not correct. With this in mind though, I will add an extra clue; unlike the 503, the unit in question is actually similar in design to the rarer class that follows it.

Class 303 ( and 311 ) fit the description, but I read the clue as meaning the TOPS classes are consecutive.

Nevertheless, I will offer it.

If it's wrong, I will quote Fernando Alonso.

If it's right, I will cut a hole in the planks underfoot.

You can starting quoting the bad loser, if you please.

One thing I will say is that the numbers aren't necessarily consecutive, but there is no intermediate between the two. There is no 374, for instance, so from the Eurostar we will find the SE 375. (Before anyone asks, 373 is also wrong.)

I'll make it a bit easier. This class is still in service today and does not serve London.

No. As far as TOPS goes, the 321 was a pretty good guess; far more so than a 507. In addition, 508s are more numerous than the class that follows the answer I seek. And remember: the class I seek and the one that follows it by TOPS are not necessarily consecutive, as shown in the 373 example. This is not to say that it is definitely the case however; merely that it is a possibility.

Would be correct. The unusual feature is the silly noise they make, which many find to be quite amusing, and by 3-coach standards they sure do hold a lot of people. But not all enthusiasts like them; if one had to like 323s as a prerequisite to being a railfan, I would need a new hobby. Like novel writing perhaps?

Oh thank the lord now I can go to bed  Seriously that was starting to bug the hell out of me!

Anyway open floor and as I've said previously do take care of it and leave in the state you'd wish to find it.

I always aim to make mine a challenge, or at least interesting! ;)

I will be taking the floor if it is still available tomorrow evening. Until then, someone else can have it...

---------------------

A fairly rare sight as a general rule, this unit is or was however very common in the areas it serves or served. Not especially numerous at only 43, but a very common sight in Birmingham and Manchester.

Its capacity is or was very high for the number of coaches it has or had - almost too high. 284 seats in a 3-car train is substantial and if anything verging on uncomfortable; compare the same 284 on c2c 357s.

One unusual feature about the train makes or made it quite popular among enthusiasts, but not all. The engine noise when accelerating and especially decelerating makes it sound vaguely like a sports car, possibly even an F1 car. Many enthusiasts are appreciative of this unusual feature.

Several similar classes exist(ed) in what is now Southeastern territory. 465s and 466s are virtually identical by build and are a common sight under Southeastern.

If listed by TOPS number, the class after this is or was very rare. There is no 324 so the next class is 325 - one of the rarest classes out there.

There is a clue out there, relating to the enthusiast clue, that would give it away. I hate the damn things! This relates to the clue about enthusiasts' perspective, above.

But the class is or was not exactly... abundant, unless of course you live(d) in one of several certain metropolitan areas. As shown above, the 323 is quite rare, unless you live in Birmingham or Manchester.

unlike the 503, the unit in question is actually similar in design to the rarer class that follows it. The 325 shares many characteristics with the 323, although the front end is different.

One thing I will say is that the numbers aren't necessarily consecutive, but there is no intermediate between the two. There is no 374, for instance, so from the Eurostar we will find the SE 375. (Before anyone asks, 373 is also wrong.) As shown above, the 325, the next class by TOPS, is very rare.

I'll make it a bit easier. This class is still in service today and does not serve London. 323s still run and rarely go any closer to London than Birmingham International (or possibly Coventry).

As far as TOPS goes, the 321 was a pretty good guess. Only the 322 separates the two!

The next clue would have been thus: This class was the last built by its manufacturer. Hunslet closed after the completion of the 323 order.

I might as well take the floor..

1) We have operated for 2 TOC's
2) We were introduced in the 21st century.

If no one wants the floor i'll take it.

1) We have operated for 2 TOC's (we were built for the first, and the second inherited us)

2) we are closely related to another typeof unit that has had a similar life to us.

3) one of our diagrams is a 1 tpd each way service where at one or two of the calling points we overhangthe platfrom and foul a level crossing.

Either you're really good at solving these ainsworth or I'm really bad at setting them. Either way you're correct sir. Your floor.

I am on quite a hot streak aren't I

Anyway onwards!

1) We were built by two different builders
2) During our production run some of us were used for experimentation
3) We appeared all over the network.

Might be easy this or hard, I can't really tell!
