Hello,

I just thought to say I'm sorry for all my spelling and grammar mistakes.

But i can't help it if i get it wrong as i've not been good with spelling, grammar and talking since i was born and yes i am 15 and going into year 11, but i try my best and i do get help but i'm not a fast learner and i have never been.

Now I love coming on this forum As Trains are my life and i don't where i would be without them, but if my spelling and grammar are making people unable to read my posts, I think its time I stick to short comments and not a paragraph.

And before anyone says i making this all up, its all true and if any of you meet me you won't think i have problems with speech first time you meet me, but once you get to know me, you will know that i have speech problems as i repeat words sometimes when i'm talking.

So thats why my Spelling and Grammar Is bad.

Ditto, some of what I wrote makes me cringe when I read it back. My spelling / grammar was awful until last autumn / winter, I think two bouts of moderation helped! ;)

I wouldn't worry too much, hopefully the pms are constructive and correctively coach your use of grammar. Use of the forum may help you develop your writing skills by reading other posts and learning from them. The more you read and write the more you'll learn and improve.

Same. I had moderation until around September 2009 and it put me on the right track, the friendly attitude of the mods helped me through, I didn't see it like that back than I thought it was just a 'dig' at me.

I'm also sure if there are any problems the moderators will help you out James.

Don't worry James, I am sure the admin team are trying to help and will have suggested some things you might be able to do to improve things.

For what it's worth, I've seen a lot of posts that are much harder to read than yours!

Don't worry, keep improving :) If you would like help, just ask.

And I'd say your opening post in this topic is a huge improvement already! The only real mistake there is some capitalisation issues.

A tip I have is to use a browser that supports a dictionary, e.g. FireFox has some good dictionary add-ons (go to Tools > Add Ons) such as the British English Dictionary, this checks words as you type them, and you can right-click and select alternative suggestions (or right-click and add words that aren't in it, as some railway-specific words may not be e.g. Pendolino )

Google Chrome also has a great spell checker which highlights the words as you go - it will all depend on which browser your comfortable working with really.

But don't worry - I find in the main that,to me, spelling and grammar do not need to be spot on all the time as long as you are using real words and not any text typing which is used on other places I frequent. Generally you can make out what someone is saying if its not too bad.

Keep going though!

I haven't seen any problems at all myself.

Me and a few other members on here are Dyslexic, but cope very well though.

Myself my spelling has actually been a strong point for me, as others have said get a plug in for your internet browser.

On that i'd recommend Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox over Internet Explorer 9.

I'd wholeheartedly recommend Google Chrome, it looks good, works good, and the spellchecker is great.

PS:
I haven't had any trouble with your posts.

I Still have problems with my grammar, spelling and my handwriting sometimes and I am alot older than you. I should not worry too much.

(There was a phrase we had to write out at school to improve our handwriting, it was also used as a typing test as it contains all the letters of the alphabet. "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog")

Hello James

I feel that this is an apology that isn't necessary, although forgive me if I don't know the entire circumstances which precipitated your apology. The reason I say this is that over the last couple of years that I've been a silver surfer on the Internet, I have noticed a sharp rise in what I would term 'grammar police': people only fixated on one thing ie the grammar and/or spelling of a person's post, even though the meaning of the post is not distorted by the bad spelling and/or grammar. Yes I have come from a background where academic standards were more stringent, and you had to spell complex, polysyllabic words by the age of 10, but I think this almost perfectionist attitude when it comes to the quality of spelling and grammar of a person's post is bordering now on the unfair, and undermining the fact that the person may have a fantastic grasp of English away from a computer, but is being judged on his academic abilities by the fact he spells atrociously on an Internet forum. I have noticed this trend on a number of forums, a couple of posters who delight in pointing out the many spelling mistakes no matter how trivial.
So I welcome your apology but I must point out that nobody should be judged on their spelling ability or their grasp of basic English grammar by their keyboard skills.

Passmore, I think that the drive towards better spelling and grammar is a reaction tot he rise of text speak, sorry txt spk, which is fine for short messages between friends, but not really easy for everyone to understand on a public forum.

I agree that ideally, no one should be taken to task for simple spelling errors and typo's, yet it does depend on the context of the post. For instance, if someone makes a post about failing to get a job, then it;s not unreasonable to point out that a poorly presented CV or application form may have had some bearing on it.

There are also, of course, huge differences between somone who just can't be bothered to try and get the spelling and grammar right, and ar ejust lazy when it comes to typing out words in full, and those who might have sight problems, or other reasons for finding the whole process difficult.

I feel it's a sensible idea to provide guidance and help where possible, as on this forum. At the end of the day, the clearer posts are the better.

Seconded.

I bet that there aren't many English teachers who are a member of this forum, but there should be some sort of minimum standard of spelling, grammar and puncuation on forums. From time to time we do get new members who post topics that are quite hard to ready and understand. If I can't easily understand the post then I'm unlikely to either want to or be able to answer a question or help out.

Spelling and grammar is important for future job prospects - not many companies would give you an interview let alone a job if your CV was littered with mistakes and poor punctuation.

A few mistakes here and there are understandable (mainly due to the speed that some people type, including myself) - but there is always a spell checker somewhere if it gets too bad.

Good points here from Greenback and Passmore, I have been corrected once or twice on this website for grammar and spelling errors and did not mind, it can be quite helpful, so long as it not done in a nasty way. Just do not take it too much to heart. Infact there is a spelling and grammar thread somewhere in this forum.

Of course it's a sensible idea to provide guidance, but what gets to me is a minority of posters who pull someone up for their spelling and/or grammar for the most trivial of mistakes.

We shouldn't be too judgmental when it comes to how someone spells or deals with tenses etc on line. Unfortunately, just as it is too easy to be a 'keyboard warrior', it's too easy to be an 'armchair critic'. For all we know, the bad speller has written a perfectly lucid CV and job application and is a quantum physicist. I just don't buy into the argument that if I spell badly, it means I'm a lazy person.

I agree with the armchair critic point. I am not judgemental myself, and my posts are usually full of typo's! I get mildly irritated when people type should of instead of should have, but it may be a regional thing, and it's certainly not worth getting worked up about!

However, I'm not saying that bad spelling equals laziness, just that it might be because someone thinks that they don't have to make their posts clear and easy to read just because it's the internet.

It doesn't matter what medium is used, if people can't understand what you are trying to communicate, they won't be interested in the message. Yes, one or two posts can nit pick on trivial things, but there aren't many and I'm sure that persistent offenders are dealt with.

There is no need for you to apologise. Your opening post seems perfectly understandable to me, keep up the good work! I often have to write or type things in another language and it can be quite a struggle at times dealing with the grammar.

On a lighter note, have a read of this if you're interested in how the human mind processes text...

You have now come to the attention of the "paragraph police" !:D
