Does anybody know what services will call at Ilkeston once it opens?
I heard that the Liverpool - Norwich would stop there on East Midlands routes.
Will there be any Northern trains that stop there?

Somebody asked the question to EMT twitter feed as to whether their Norwich Liverpool trains will be stopping here. They just said "yes". I cringed as knew it was only a handful. Pretty poor response I thought.

That was me I think-the response said it would be included and attached the timetable.

It's great that Ilkeston station is opening next week and the local press are making statements like 'it will transform the way that local people travel', 'will, give a significant boost to the local economy', 'will relieve congestion on the roads'.

Certainly the roads into Nottingham at peak times from the Ilkeston direction are very congested with the bus from Ilkeston to Nottingham taking in excess of 45 minutes at peak times. Therefore a train journey of approx only 15 minutes ought to be very successful. However, will a service of only one train an hour at peak times really be adequate to attract people to use it in great numbers, especially with so few trains arriving in Nottingham before 9.00am. Ive never travelled on the Leeds-Sheffield-Nottingham trains at that time in the morning and so have no idea how busy the 2 carriage 158's already are without the addition of Ilkeston passengers.

If I recall rightly there was a very friendly and affable pub with decent ale close to where the station was going to be some years back - is it still the case?

The Dewdrop. Always was good, I met the old landlord (Danny Meakin) at my mother's funeral a year or so ago. On Facebook and getting good notes.

The Junction Cafe near the station does very good breakfasts too. Lots of interesting old railway photos on the walls in there too. Many of the men who have been constructing the station have been regular customers over past few months.

I think EMT will need to stop in both directions (hourly) to make this station more viable. The late evening service is poor with 2hr (plus) stripes.

Last train out of Nottingham towards Sheffield/Chesterfield calls at Ilkeston anyway at 2135, so not much they can do about putting a service on afterwards.

Does anyone know if the new Ilkeston station is actually on Station Street - ie next to the Dewdrop Inn? I've had a look on google maps but as the last pictures on there are from March 2016, there isn't much evidence of a station!

Between Coronation Road (which appears to be a continuation of Station Road) and Millership Way, slightly north of the former junction. Bing has the station symbol but no sign of it on the photography.

Either that or the putative Derby to Manchester and beyond train providing the 3 in the 3TPH expresses over the Hope Valley line. Or has that disappeared into Never Ever Land?

Is there a return working or is this purely for stock rotation purposes?

As far as I'm aware not's about stock rotation and more about it being operationally convenient to bolt an S&C service and a Leeds - Nottingham express together into one!

I think it depends on resignalling on the Hope Valley reducing the headways, it's also politically difficult because RailNorth & certain passenger groups want the 3rd path to run between Manchester & Sheffield rather than to the East Midlands via the Dore curve which is probably where most of the untapped demand is.

I can't see EMT stopping their Liverpool - Norwich services at Ilkeston, Nottingham to Sheffield journey times are slow but far more important than making Ilkeston station a success.

Can't believe there going to pay this bloke day and night to stand there holding the sign telling us the stations coming up .
What's that all about, complete waste of money, who's got the Daily Mail Address.

This is the return working, the unit works the 1017 Sheffield to Carlisle, forming this to Nottingham. The same unit then works back to Sheffield and then I believe up to Hull.

19:32 St Pancras to Leeds How about this one?

Arguably Northern or EMT should be required to run a train from Nottingham to Sheffield departing Nottingham no earlier than 22:00.
Difficult because there are no grandfather rights to stop a HST at Ilkeston. It isn't impossible but any new build short platforms on the EM route only have HSTs able to call for a contingency in out of course movements (Loughborough P3), or unusually, any service at P3/4 for East Midlands Parkway.

*Edit* Perhaps additional EMT local services at 2017 and 2217 to Alfreton or Chesterfield only? :P

The problem with Ilkeston is going to be patronage. It will be too high. The journey time to a tram stop in Nottingham is so attractive, the fare comparable with petrol plus parking for two passengers and Nottingham via Ilkeston Rd then parking is a protracted journey.

This is a rail re-opening that will exceed estimates like the Borders Railway.

It has an hourly service for much of the day. I am not sure what more could be provided short of stopping every Liverpool/Norwich service there which I doubt EMT are keen to do

Indeed and its not going to solve the problem of evening services that much. The EMT HST that I missed above is only half an hour after the current last scheduled service, you would still have a last train before 10pm. As for the rest of the evening, there arent a huge number of trains after 7pm anyway and two of them are HSTs (including the one suggested after the current last train).

Maybe you could provide a later last train to Ilkeston by extending a terminating service in Nottingham. A quick look suggests maybe the 2254 Spalding, the 2253 Skegness than comes in forms a service to Leicester.
Would probably need someone to pay for it, though.

The Liverpool/Norwich services do often have about 15 minutes at Nottingham though. Could you not let them go a bit early/bring them in late to get a stop in at Ilkeston.

This extra time at Nottingham is used for coupling/uncoupling the extra unit on or off.

Now all the 'enthusiasts' have had a chance, is there any indication of the number of real passengers? I heard that there was pent up demand from commuters, so how busy is the car park?
I know I'm a bit premature, school holidays and all.
