Ilford approach lines

Does anyone know whether any scheduled passenger services use the up or down passenger avoiding lines between Ilford and Manor Park?

Every time I have travelled the line it has always been either the centre roads or the flyover.

I believe the 17:06 Southminster to Liverpool Street uses the up avoiding line.

I was under the impression those avoiding lines are for the use of freight and ECS movements, to free the up/down main and the up/down electric. I could be wrong..

Not many then!! I suspected they wouldn't get much use by passenger trains as ECS and freight is the most obvious use.

They are also used sometimes when Engineering work is taking place

No worries. The only other time I've used it was during engineering works and disruption when we are diverted onto the electric lines.

The UP avoider is used a great deal especially during routine daytime patrolling amongst other things.

The 08.30 SX Southend Vic to Liverpool St is another train that uses the up I line round the side of the flyover. Off the top I can't think of any booked passenger trains on the down I line.

On the up main the route is signalled for 50mph with flashing yellows after passing Seven Kings (not that common on the GEML). Crossing back to the up electric line at the foot of the flyover before Manor Park is also 50mph. The rare track for passenger services is to continue round the back of Manor Park station and join the up electric at Forest Gate Jn, but that is a slower route.

In the other direction it is much slower, and is most commonly used by ECS after the morning peak going to Ilford Car Sheds. They are handy routes for crossing main to electric without conflicting with traffic in the opposite direction.

It was five but I think it's now seven with those associated with the Bacon Factory Curve at Ipswich.

The 11:10 Southend Vic -Liv St. uses the up avoiding too. Continuing on the Up Electric as far as Bethnal Green. No booked non ECS use the Down Avoiding, but never say never! As stated only really used when there is a block on the Down Main.

Nope. Platform 5 at Ilford is taken out of use with the May 16 timetable to allow for platform 4 to be lengthened, but the down avoiding line remains in use throughout and will not be removed.
