If you were given the role of re-opening a dissused/closed railway line as a preserved line, what line would you re-open and what would you have running on it.

you have the lotto heretage fund behind you so feel free to go crazy :D

for me I would re-open the Templecomb-Bath route, having done it on Rail simulator I thaught it would be good as a pres line.

I would re-do the lines on the lower level, this would be the depot and here I would have the following

Black 5`s
Class 20`s
Class 37`s
Class 50`s
Tornado
Pannier tanks
A4 Mallard
Class 56
a few more steamers
Mk1`s
Mk2`s including Air cons
and
A HST set from EMT with 43050 and 43072

oh not forgetting the pacer and 101 DMU :P

It would cost alot, but in imagination land anythings possible

I think the best choice for me to consider is the Norfolk Orbital Railway combining all available routes as one so running services over NNR, MNR etc...

I mean a regular service would do wonders for the local economies, vastly improving transport links and people's lifes.

Cambridge to Bedford/Oxford or Saxmundham - Aldeburgh (currently only served once a week by a nuclear flask train). I would run Thumpers, 150s and Pacers.

As a diversionary route for the ECML, you could run just about anything on it...Deltics, 40s, Peaks and Gresley Pacifics were just the start of it. I imagine the roar of a Deltic powering out of Shildon Tunnel would be quite something, too. :)

Andover-Romsey, better known as the Sprat and Winkle. In an ideal world M7 tank locomotives, S15s, 30120 (last surviving T9 locomotive): in other words, I'd try and include an example of a Southern Railway/Southern Region steam locomotive that's currently in preservation.

With regards to diesel/electric locomotives, I'd try and obtain a couple of 33s, a 73, a 37, a 47, a 205, and even an HST!

Coaching stock would include Mk1s (corridor and a couple of non-corridor ones), Bulleid-design coaches, a set of Mk3s, despite having never been used on the line (closed in 1964), and a 4CIG in Blue/Grey (the Blue/Grey 3CIG used on the Lymington branch would be purchased and augmented with a Blue/Grey MK1 TSO to create a 4CIG), which would be used in push-pull formation with the 33 or 73 due to lack of a third rail.

Just because it's in my back yard, and would give a lot of connections for currently silly journeys I'd reopen the routes Redditch-Evesham, Broom Jcn-Bearley and Stratford-Cheltenham. I'd run services as two clockwise and anti-clockwise routes Chel-Strat-Eves and Chel-Eves-Strat and a seperate Alcester-Redditch run. I'd have a 101 (Reg railways), 105 (Green), 108 (plain blue) and 117 (WM provincial) class DMUs, three rakes of mk1 stock (1 maroon, 1 BR Blue and 1 NSE) and 2 Class 37/0s (both green), two Class 31/4s (BR Blue) and a NSE Class 50. For the steam fans I'd have an Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 mogul, an LMS compound and a pair of Black 5s.

I've always wanted to re-open Worcester to New Radnor (with upgrading of Leominster to fit it all in and no doubt a bridge or something to cross the mainline since I doubt they'd like me running at all on the Marches), as this was my old local line.

Would come in handy, as it would have the possibility of removing the lorries full of stone off the road.

Traction would be proper stuff and a mix of steam and diesel:

GWR Panniers
GWR Halls
The occasional Castle or King
20s
37s
and, of course, HSTs on a once daily direct service to/from Paddington.

I would make the MHR by reopening the section from Alresford to Winchester and build a bridge over the M3 and buy and demolish the properties built over the trackbed.

Bridge road to Kirkstall Abbey in Leeds, in 2' gauge.

Operating with an assortment of 12 ex industrial and military diesel, petrol and electric locos.

;)

Alternatively, in the fantasy world, rebuilding the George Bennie Railplane in Milngavie near Glasgow would be interesting, possibly with more track so the car can reach its 120mph top speed! :D

I would re-open two and utilise an existing stretch in the process (which was threatened in the Beeching era), as follows:

Maldon - Witham - Braintree - Bishop's Stortford diverting via Stansted Airport

As much as I would like to run something preserved, it would have to use something like a 321 (<( [do not like 321s!]).

My choice would have to be Penzance - Inverness with a fairly tight left-hander around the south and eastern sides of London adapted to full-speed running. 8)

Of course, power of my choice would have to be the APT-E, original APT-P, a new build of 370's, plus a few high-speed "prototypes" of my own design... ;)

Oh, ye say it has to be a "preserved" line? Well, it can still be that, too...As passengers would be pickled stiff by the service speeds being aimed for...<D
