Something that I thought would be an interesting point of discussion: if you ran the railways, what stock would you use on which types of routes??

To give some guidelines, what stock would people use on:

- Suburban commuter routes; such as the London inner and outer suburban routes.

- Regional routes; such as Thameslink, London to Peterborough, Victoria to Portsmouth and Brighton stoppers, Thames valley services etc.

- Express services with regular stops; such as GEML stoppers, Victoria to Brighton expresses, Plymouth to Penzance etc.

- Express services with few stops; such as ECML, WCML, GWML expresses, GEML and SWML fast services etc.

- Branch lines; such as the Looe Valley (I think) line

No restrictions on the age of trains, method or traction, or any other potential real world restrictions, just make it what you want! (Wierder the better! Though if anyone suggests Pacers for the WCML, I know a good therapist ;) ha!)

To start it off, I'm a big fan of the BREL Mk3 family, and would electrify everything except branch lines, so:

Class 455 (the first train I ever went on!) for suburban commuter routes

Class 319 for regional routes

Class 442 for express services with regular stops

Class 91 hauling Mk 3 coaches for express services with few stops

Class 150 for branch lines

Let's see what other people would use :P

Most of these won't fit in UK gauge but assuming appropriate shrinkage.
Also assuming most routes are Wired

Express - DB Class 411 (in 9 car form)
Regional Express- 444 or a 158 derivative
Regional - AGC BiBi, Talent 2 or FLIRT
Commuter - 450
Metro - DB 423 or a reliable version of the 481
Local Branches - Desiro Classic, Regioshuttle, GTW
Scenic Routes - SPATZ

I'd use compartmented Mk1s and pressure-ventilated, compartmented Mk2s- Hauled by Deltics on diesel intercity services and 37s or 25s on regional diesel services. Local stopping/branchline services run by 104s (110s on steeply-graded routes).

Electric intercity services would be hauled by 87s, with AC commuter services run by 309s (semi-fast) and 303s (stoppers).

On the DC network, fasts would be 442s; semi-fasts would be 411s/421s and stoppers being 423s.

The only exception would be the Chiltern lines, which would get 141s and 142s until the population of the area stopped being so NIMBYish about HS2! <D

Compartment stock, I dont care what format - modern safety electronics can take away the risk that was perceived in the 1980s when it all disappeared. And electrify everything.

a 110mph compartment stock class 309 equivalent could cover a lot of different service patterns

Also every train of more than 5 carriages to have half a vehicle reserved for bicycles
