She can't have been the only person not travelling on an Advance. You'd think there would be mass complaints being made to the TOC if this was being enforced for everyone.

Just as a point of interest, a 1505 train wouldn't fall into "peak" anyway would it?

Not for this journey, but from London to Manchester, it certainly would!

The incident referred to was on a Sunday so there would no afternoon peak, even with a London to Manchester ticket.

If what you say is true then it sounds like a guard making up his own rules, which needs bringing to VTEC’s attention.

I would be interested in understanding if there were unreserved seats on the train available to walk ups or if the train was 100% reserved
(From Ainsworth in May
Coach H (the buffet) is totally unreserved on electric sets but there are no sockets (if that's is important to you). On HSTs the unreserved seats are scattered throughout the train usually with few at each carriage end)

If there are unreserved seats I wonder who the guard thinks should be sitting in them?

Perhaps when you write to VTEC management you could ask them.

If you went to the ticket office and asked when the next train to London was and could you buy a ticket for it, would you be told that you were unable to board this train and instead told about the following one or would they happily take your £105.20 with a smile and then let you pay the guard another £105.20 because I would be considering legal action if they tried that one with me and plenty of others on here.

Something is very very wrong with all this. Can any of our resident VTEC people do some digging?

Byelaw 24 (2) entitles an authorised person to require a person in violation of any byelaw (including 12) to leave the railway.

It remains to be shown whether byelaw 12 was engaged.

But *not* to make good by selling a ticket when the passenger held one that was already valid.

(I suppose tenuously the TOC could offer "buying another ticket" as an out of court settlement, but I very much doubt traincrew have the remit to do that).
