IEP for beginners

I would like to know what the difference is between "hybrid" and "bi-modal" since I'd always assumed one was a synonym for the other in IEP's case.

Hybrid is where the trains work like Class 139 People Parry movers, using Hybrid Diesel, whereas bi - modal it seems is where it will have both Hybrid diesel and a pantograph to pick up power from the OHLE.

So the - bi modal will be like a class 73, accept with a pantograph and be a passenger train rather than a locomotive.

The reason for me finding teh previous wikipedia link was down to the fact that I was trying to find if another manufaturer of trains has created a hybrid train other than Hitachi, not realising that I should have been searching on hybrid bi - modal train.

Actually, doesn't it just mean "DEMU"? Just like hybrid cars. There certainly weren't going to be any diesel mechanical or hydraulic variants of IEP.

That is what I said in a different thread, but got corrected that they will be EDMU's rather then DEMU's.

Hybrid Diesels, like the Voyagers, are DEMUs. If you're building a bi-modal train, it would be referred to as an EDMU. (Well, at least that's how I understand it!)

Is London-Hull (going to be) electrified? That's currently served by FHT using Adelantes, isn't it? I guess it makes sense to be wired up, and making it another EC destination makes a lot of sense too.

Correct.

But one of the benefits of bi-mode is that when one bit of line is electrified (like Selby to Hull in CP6, hypothetically) allowing that to move to a wholly electric service you can move the bi-mode ones over to new services (e.g. London - Lincoln or Manchester - Middlesbrough),

there are four East Coast HST diagrams that are entirely under the wires

(cue lots of complaining about "dragging those diesel engines hundreds of miles a day under the wires", but without the benefit of actually using electricity?)

I never mentioned anything about traxx locos and IEP. My mention of traxx was on a completely different thread.

With loco + electric traction the loco would only be hauling the it the last bit at the end. Like I said before even the industry experts think bi-mode is a rubbish idea. But then what does it matter what they think eh? if the people want very expensive inefficient bi-mode IEP thats what they will get!

If you can electrify a couple of thousand miles (on top of the nine hundred miles being wired in CP5) then there'd be no need for bi-mode. But that's not going to happen, so there's going to have to be some compromise:

  • Bi-mode
  • Abandoning direct London trains for some places
  • Running diesel trains long distances under the wires
  • Building locomotives for the sake of one or two drags a day (and hoping that "quick" couplers work every time)

All have their disadvantages.

And they all have their objectors, the thing is which are the majority of the customers going to find the most difficult to accept. I would suggest that it would be losing their direct service would mean that the most people stopped using the railways, the next biggest risk would be trains that took longer and/or where more prone to delays.

Most customers don't care what train they run on as long as it's quick enough, is of a reasonable price and they do not have to change too much. With various variables being tolerated if the others make up for it. Therefore as long as ticket prices don't rocket up (and train leasing costs only make up one part of the cost of running the railways) most people will carry on using the railways as long as the other two don't get worse.

Replacing East Coast's HSTs. Having 10 x 5-car Bi-mode trains offers more flexibility to match train capacity to loadings at different times of the day and over different sections of route. Though admittedly 13 x 9-car IEP trains and 10 x 5-car Bi-mode IEP trains to replace 13 HST diagrams seems like a lot at face value.

The thirteen bi-mode ECML IEPs are a direct swap for the EC HSTs whilst the others may be for routes like London - Hull

Thanks this answers some questions I had as to why so many Bi-modes were needed for what seemed like so few services that went beyond the wires for the ECML, still seems like to many given futre electrification may render some Bi-modes surplus within a few years of their construction, better to just have a few Bi-Modes for Edinburgh - Aberdeen and keep the existing arrangements for Hull until CP6 Electrification comes around.

Customers? Don't you mean passengers? There is a difference and it is reflected in the whole attitude of the industry to the way it treats the people who use the railways. The term popped up in the late 1980s and was regarded by my fellow commuters with cynicism, in response to what was perceived as a cynical use of language.

As for the original issue regarding through services. Diesel running under the wires is not in itself catastrophic. It becomes a nuisance when small non-standard fleets have to be supported. Changing is unpopular especially where passengers have become used to through services but the disadvantages can be mitigated by having convenient changes. Harwich lost its through service to London a couple of years ago. The plus side is a more comfortable journey to Manningtree. The waiting times are quite acceptable - in the down direction, there is a train waiting. The only disadvantage is the stairs at Manningtree, which are a nuisance for the ferry passengers with luggage. So the solution in this instance is to put in lifts at Manningree, which also addresses the accessibility requirement.

But when passengers are thought of as customers, there is a tendency to stop thinking of the railways as a service for people, and regard passengers just as the source of a revenue stream. So these kind of particular issues are lost as management starts to think in a globalised way.

Still it seems like a lot given the extra cost of the diesel engines stated earlier in this thread for them to be removed in 10 years due to electrification works rendering them obsolete, as for cascades I can see the being cascaded to routes like Cross Country, but given the 220, 221 and 222 fleets have plenty of life left in them yet it seems wrong to build more 125mph capable EDMU's that in the long term that seem unnecessary.

Don't get me wrong I agree with Bi-mode trains for routes like Paddington to the South West that are unlikely to be electrified in the next 10-15 years but routes that could be electrified like Selby-Hull they seem unnecessary when we could continue with the current arrangements till they are electrified hopefully within 10 years time.

I'm not sure what the price difference is between a bi-modal and an electric-only IEP train, but I'd hope the diesel engines only make up a relatively small cost in comparison to the rest of the train. The alternative suggestion of using locomotives to drag the EMUs beyond the wires could equally result in surplus diesel traction with no future.

The problem there is that to meet disability and accessibiliy regulations, a lot of work needs to be undertaken on the Mk3 HST trailers. If that work costs more than the addition of diesel engines in the IEP sets, it doesn't represent good value for money.

Longer formations would do the full run in the peaks to/from London.

This notion should, however, be seen in the light of what I said in post No 191 on page 13 about Mark Hopwood's remarks about current loadings on five-car 180s on the Cotswold Line and the things the GW invitation to tender said about possible variations in IEP formations.

Dave1987, I am still waiting for your explanation of how your diesel locomotives are going to be fuelled and maintained while working on routes miles away from any GW traction maintenance depot.

Thats not the point! You are wasting vast amounts of energy carting the diesel engine under the wires. Putting the wires up is meant to be environmentally friendly. How is wasting massive amounts of energy eco friendly. Supporters still havent said anything that counters this argument and industry experts also think its an incredibly stupid and expensive idea

Bi-mode is not so much an issue in itself, it is the cost of the trains and the perpetuation of powerful underfloor engines which makes trains such as the Voyagers so unsatisfactory for passengers.

The disability and accessibility regulations that are being given as a reason for replacing the Mk 3 trailers could presumably be resolved by a small build of new trailers that were compliant with those regulations. That is a different matter from replacing the entire fleet.

So the cost of providing a small facility at Oxford would be astronomical? But if this is the case, it begins to look as if London to Worcester and Hereford should continue to be operated in the same way that London to Plymouth will be for many years to come. Thus Oxford should be primarily the terminus for suburban services from London.

I do not need to do a Lance Armstrong and come clean until the figures have emerged, which could take some time. And even after that there will be costs as it becomes necessary to clear more of the system for the longer vehicles. It will take a decade for all the costs of this decision to surface. The depot upgrade is not trivial either.

If it was only a minor matter to improve the clearances for 26 metre vehicles why was this not done as part of the WCML upgrade? It would be surprising if nobody had considered it then.

I am saying that more fuel is likely to be wasted if there are many fuel tanks to be filled up than if there is only one. Is that contentious?
Why were Voyagers and Adelantes all built with five coaches?

5/6 cars it is the figure quoted by respected commentators such as Roger Ford and by Ian Walmsley who is I believe engineering director of Porterbrook, and both have been vociferous in their objection to IEP. The Pendolino is a fixed formation electric unit with distributed power. Not comparable.
I don't know. But it spoils your "why didn't we use long coaches on the WCML" argument if you realise that the line is cleared for 25m coaches.
Longer end vehicles would be exempt from such a restriction as cabs can be tapered. It is the distance between the bogie centres that counts.
If it was possible to clear the WCML (inc diversionary routes like the S&C) for these 25m coaches then I'd be interested to hear about the "significant" infrastructure costs required to allow IEP.
If the WCML was cleared for longer vehicles then why were the Pendolinos 23 metres?
Are you saying that we should use DMUs all the way from Inverness to London?

If the technology on the Weymouth 33s was so amazing then why was it not used on the Uckfield line? Why take DMUs all the way into London (and have to change the services because of emission problems at Victoria) when there was a simple reliable way to drag EMUs? Could it be because things weren't quite as simple or reliable?
The 33s were used on the rush hour East Grinstead services and ran all the way into London. Th line was not electrified south of Sanderstead before 1992 when it was electrified to East Grinstead. By that time the 33s were on the way out. Turbostars are an easy fix for the Uckfield line as a replacement for the DEMUs. The whole route is too short to mess around with a loco change. Or a bi-mode.

What has London to Inverness to do with this discussion? Another classic example of a need either for a proper replacement for the HST or loco haulage all the way or a loco change somewhere. What happens with the sleeping car trains? Or are you suggesting IEP sleepers?
So now we should consider the Worcester/ Cheltenham (etc) passengers that they are unimportant and ought to change trains instead of getting a through service?
Same problem as Cornwall. Carry on with the HSTs. Or loco haul all the way. Or change locos. The DfT screwed up by not coming up with a replacement, which was the original aim of the IEP project. It's the price of incompetence. But the massive price tag of IEP is the price of incompetence. Not my conclusion - it was Foster's.

Let's look at it this way. If you, as a TOC on a fair footing, have the option of propelling a bi-mode train through electric OHLE (paying for and consuming electricity) or diesel (paying for fuel, greater waste products/gas, lower efficiency, increased dependence on the diesel drivetrain and greater downtime as this is relied upon for longer, greater noise internally and externally as well as slower acceleration), which would you choose?

But anyway, yes. Bi-mode trains do have to cart diesel traction packs around under the wires, but these can be removed from IEP as and when is required. Locos, we have too many of them available/rotting away, including a sizeable number of 60s. A future is not guaranteed from either 'pathway', although more can be done with a complete locomotive. If these don't find any use, however, the waste is greater. Which form is more sustainable?

Furthermore, I recall a thread long ago (can't remember name and such, nor am I bothered to search :P) where the OP asked whether a diesel locomotive could power the traction motors of a coupled EMU through an electric bus. Apparently, this is not possible with any stock available today. Has a new system and coupler been designed to do so? As such has not yet occurred, diesel-hauled acceleration is awful in comparison to distributed traction; even if I have exaggerated slightly.

And what with the maintenance regime, engine movements and the extra staff required for such? The extra time and space required for movement and coupling whilst allowing for delays, breakdowns and slower acceleration? Honestly, the majority of us realise that although loco haulage has its benefits, bi-mode is the way to go for this new InterCity train, IEP.

NO, because the MU's would pay for the cost difference in 3 years! 3 years, of a 40 year train life span, that then means that they have another 37 years (or a factor of 12 over the break even point) where the better running costs are bring in extra profit for them.

One of the main reasons given for this is because of extra capacity, which is massively important to the UK railways.

I have listed before the capacity of the IEP trains would provide over the other options put forward and how they get more passengers per length of train than any other option, which means that we do not have to invest in infrastructure to improve capacity and/or have more stations with SDO, which allows for some future proofing of the network. Which given the rate of growth of the railways is essential.

Also, although SDO could be used at more stations there comes a point when it means that carriages are under used. For if you build a train too long for most stations along a line, including a few key stations the carriage(s) which rarely stop at platforms would not be used, or the dwell time at each station has to go up to allow for passengers finding that they cant get off from their carriage. As well as having to have a lot of automated announcements telling people in the relevant carriages that they have to move to another portion of the train (potentially with a large amount of luggage) which is just going to annoy everyone, especially if the seat booking system books your seat in the wrong carriage for you to get off the train from it at your station. All in all SDO is only OK if it is used at a few stations along a route where the numbers of passengers for those stations are fairly low and the numbers of passenger travelling between the stations where SDO is used is very low.

Sorry but these locos are expected to run for 35 years, they will have no use when the lines are electrified, they will wast massive amounts of energy (in their construction). I can't believe people are willing to condone this waste.

For decades the economics of diesel versus electric was argued
  1. The overall thermal efficiency of diesel was around 30% (depending whom you asked) whereas electric was around 20%.
  2. Electric trains and locomotives were less expensive in first cost than their diesel counterparts.
  3. Electric trains and locomotives were less expensive in running cost than their diesel counterparts.
  4. Electrification was not worth while unless traffic density was at a level sufficient to justify the installation of the fixed equipment.
  5. Electrification caused less pollution at the point of use.
  6. Electrification gave flexibility as to energy sources.
This probably lists all the most important factors. Applying figures to them is uncertain, but however it is done, the end result is a "triage". There are routes which must be electrified, routes which are definitely not worth electrifying, and routes where it makes little difference either way.

The other consideration is the break-even point for haulage by diesel locomotives rather than DMU, which most authorities suggest is five or six vehicles, and the end result is that the system will have routes which are not electrified throughout their length and are unlikely ever to be eg London to Cornwall. On such routes, until someone thought up the idea of bi-mode, it was accepted that diesel running under the wires was inevitable. I suspect the energy costs of carrying around diesel engines under the wires, and transformer packs off the electrified routes, is not particularly significant in the overall costs. And until recently, it was always argued that running a diesel powered train results in a saving of energy compared to running it under electric power!

The biggest costs on the railway are track costs, partly related to weight, the capital costs of the rolling stock, and staff costs, incurred in operating and maintaining trains. Energy costs are a relatively small item compared to the others.

From this, the following strategy emerges

For instance if the line between Oxford and Moreton-in-Marsh was electrified then the mini depot (suggested by others and by the way no one has explained how they are going to staff it in a cost effective way yet) that has just been built for storing, refuelling and minor maintenance on your loco's at Oxford is now in the wrong place. Whilst with bi-modal it causes no such problems and the train just runs under electric traction for longer (reducing CO2 emissions).

As another alternative what do you do about the East Coast services which run to Inverness, do they add a loco and run under existing wires before they peal off (at a station which is not suitable for adding a loco at), or by having a Bi-modal train run using electric traction until the wires stop and then run using diesel power?


The extra cost and waste of energy to lug engines and fuel around is fairly small, if the engines and fuel weigh 20 tons that is 18143.7kg which is the same as 263 women of average weight in the UK (with no possessions). Which means the extra weight is the less than the weight of the passengers for a 5 coach IEP train if it was 83.5% full (of only women and not counting staff) and they had no stuff (which is highly unlikely). If it was only men then (as they are heavier) it would only need to be 68.6% full (again with no stuff or staff on the train).

Also as stated before because of the better use of internal space it is likely that there will be less carriage weight per seat, which would further offset the extra weight of the engines and fuel. It is also a whole lot lighter than the weight of any loco, which has to be lugged about off the wires.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the fuel tanks could run fairly empty (so less chance of overspill when filling them as they would not be being filled to the top) on services which are running solely under the wires as they wouldn't need much fuel to keep hospitality going for several hours and/or to limp to the next point where there was power or the next station. Even those services which were running beyond the wires wouldn't need to carry as much fuel as a train which is running solely by diesel (which in all likelihood is what the DfT was comparing against).

There might be a political component to the decision. But it depends on the precise nature of the route and all sorts of factors. And are they really replacing with EMUs or what? The Pendolino is not an EMU but a fixed formation unit train. The X2000 looks like an EMU but is not - these are locomotive hauled sets running in various and easily altered lengths in push-pull mode and capable of running in pairs of up to about 12 coaches. And the HST is a locomotive-hauled train.
NO, because the MU's would pay for the cost difference in 3 years! 3 years, of a 40 year train life span, that then means that they have another 37 years (or a factor of 12 over the break even point) where the better running costs are bring in extra profit for them.
That is barely credible. How can they make this saving? For a start, it implies the withdrawal and replacement of all the existing vehicles.
One of the main reasons given for this is because of extra capacity, which is massively important to the UK railways.

What you say is true as a generalisation. A locomotive is a box of equipment which cannot be used for revenue-earning purposes. Where platform lengths are critical it is advantageous to put it under the floor. But there are costs in doing so, for example, the capital cost per vehicle is higher if they are all powered, and it comes at the cost of comfort if it is diesel power.

In practice, however, on routes where the longer IEP is proposed, how many stations are actually subject to length restrictions and which are they? What appears to be the case, as the debate unfolds, is that the routes in question could be served by conventional electric trains on the electrified sections, and locomotive haulage on routes which are not electrified throughout.
Also, although SDO could be used at more stations there comes a point when it means that carriages are under used. For if you build a train too long for most stations along a line, including a few key stations the carriage(s) which rarely stop at platforms would not be used, or the dwell time at each station has to go up to allow for passengers finding that they cant get off from their carriage. As well as having to have a lot of automated announcements telling people in the relevant carriages that they have to move to another portion of the train (potentially with a large amount of luggage) which is just going to annoy everyone, especially if the seat booking system books your seat in the wrong carriage for you to get off the train from it at your station. All in all SDO is only OK if it is used at a few stations along a route where the numbers of passengers for those stations are fairly low and the numbers of passenger travelling between the stations where SDO is used is very low.
How do things actually function? The present Waterloo-Exeter and the old Waterloo-Weymouth operations are examples of the sort of compromises that occur - less than perfect but they work and do not cost an arm-and-a-leg. Bi-mode would allow the use of electricity all the way to Basingstoke, and to Salisbury if electrification was extended. This would avoid running nine car DMUs. But west of Salisbury the traffic is light so three-car trains are the standard formation. Waterloo-Weymouth trains were operated as 12 car trains with 2xTC units unpowered and the REP unit with enough power to drive the whole train. The REP was left behind at Bournemouth whilst the TCs were pulled to Weymouth and pushed back. TCs could also work with class 73 locomotives. The system was flexible, sophisticated and technically simple.
Sorry but these locos are expected to run for 35 years, they will have no use when the lines are electrified, they will wast massive amounts of energy (in their construction). I can't believe people are willing to condone this waste.
Presumably you are referring to the use of new diesel locomotives in the UK? There will be plenty of non-electrified routes in 35 years time. But to judge from everything that has been said on the subject, it sounds as if the easiest solution for routes that are not electrified throughout, but for which through services are required, is to soldier on with HSTs for as long as they can be kept going. That way, no massive amounts of energy need to be wasted in the construction of anything.

The comparison is to add up the weight of all the traction equipment that is under the floor that would then go in a locomotive. There will be a break-even point. The extra weight of the loco hauled train is that of the locomotive as an empty "box". But remember that powerful underfloor diesels are not nice things to have to sit on top of for hours on end. And compliance with emission regulations is easier to deal with at one go with a single large engine.

I agree that Bi-modal only has a marginal place on the railway and it is nothing more than a fad. However I think that because it allows the network to be electrified a bit at a time rather than having to electrify whole sections in a very short time ready for the new electric rolling stock and then not doing any more until the next lot of trains are due to be delivered.

Right here are some facts for you two which you might find shocking:-
- Locomotives Haulling coaches are no longer the answer to higher speeds.
- Sticking a Traxx on the end of an EMU won't solve everything as some people think
- MUs aren't a devil train as you suggest they are good units

Conclusion:-
- You are all overreacting, no one actually knows what form IEP will take. It keeps changing and it may change again.

But in the case of the Oxford-Worcester route, why not just use new EMUs between Oxford and London, probably something like a class 350, and give the 165/166s a thorough refurb for the through services to Worcester? They have nice spacious 23 metre x 2.82 bodyshells and the engine noise is not over-intrusive compared to Voyagers.

As a general point, given the shortage of suitable locomotives, electrification needs to proceed quickly with the aim of establishing a rational network of routes which are electrified throughout. Diesel traction can then be withdrawn to the fringes of the system and where there could be scope for applying other technologies - flywheels, fuel cells, modern steam, whatever.

Haven't we already established it's neither "vast" nor "massive"? IEP carriages weigh less than Voyager carriages. They will be more efficient than Voyagers under diesel traction, more efficient on the wires than an equivalent diesel running under them and not quite as efficient on the wires as a straight up IEP EMU.

I also believe that being inefficient with electricity is politically far more acceptable than with diesel. We may not be there yet, but there are aspirations to harvest cheap, clean energy. I think we will see breakthroughs in this area long before we're sending the IEPs off to Booth's. As a country and as a planet, we cannot afford not to. That's not to say we should be grossly inefficient, but carting a few tonnes of engine around isn't exactly Earth-shatteringly bad.

I get the impression that we are getting involved in details and have lost sight of the main objection to the IEP - it is a very expensive train. Foster's recommendation was that there were less expensive alternatives that needed to be looked at, and they were not. Sir Humphrey got his way in the end.

I keep asking opponents for how they'd rather services were run, but they never get into specifics. Since we haven't electrified every line, any "solution" is wasteful - is running diesels long distances under the wires not wasteful?).

What's it got to do with this? It's one of the routes where bi-mode is required. Currently we have HSTs travelling 400 miles under the wires (more when the EGIP is done) - but certain people don't think that is "wasteful". Odd.

Sory but when these trains are expected to run for 40 years, the Diesel engines have no use if they are removed, they will wasted massive amounts of energy. Over 40 years how much energy do you think will be wasted by these trains? Cannot believe people are willing to condone this waste.

With bi-mode you can gradually continue the electrification and do the switch over a little further along each year until the whole route is electrified.

To whoever mentioned it above - I asked about a traction power bus and the possibility of detachable generator units in this thread too. I don't see any reason why it's not possible provided the IEP units are designed with a power bus, nor is it beyond the powers of humans to design couplers that work. If the couplers for spacecraft didn't work every time then we'd not have a usable ISS, for one thing.

I don't have any particular attachment to bi-mode vs seperate diesel haulage, however it does seem at first glance to be a considerable waste to drag potentially unnecessary weight around, hence trying out alternatives. If there's no less costly alternative then bi-mode *is* right no matter how daft it appears. There are more solutions than "buying a traditional diesel and hammering a coupling onto it" though - designing EMUs to accept power from an attached genset as well as wiring would seem a reasonable idea for the future.

There is nothing to stop you attaching the locomotive/genset at a suitable important point and having the EMU drag it to the end of the wires, btw - you don't have to attach it at the end of the knitting if that's operationally too costly. Bi-mode is doing quite a lot of that all the time as it is.
