That, in my opinion, is where bi-mode comes in. Not on ICEC and IC-GWML, but on regional express. Something like a bi-mode version of class 444 (or 175 with corridor connections on the ends) to do things like Cardiff - Portsmouth, Waterloo - Exeter and perhaps Liverpool - Norwich. That releases lots of 158s and 159s to play with elsewhere. A straight-electric version of this 444-esque bi-mode would be useful for TPE electrification (and the north Wales coast line if it get wired).

The regional bi-mode train would be needed to replace the 158/159s at the same time as the engines in the bi-mode IEPs are no longer necessary, if they are kept only on the routes they were originally intended for. The IEP diesel power packs are modular and are the only emissions-compliant multiple-unit engine that we will be seeing for quite a bit of time.

When I said giving the DFT the ability to extend the electrification process, I meant extend the time frames. Bi-mode trains gives them an excuse to electrify less quickly.

I think bi-mode is a stupid expensive idea, so do many industry experts. But it's happening so never mind eh!

Well there's XC, Nuneaton-Felixstowe, the Cotswold Line, Swindon-Gloucester, Gloucester-Severn Tunnel Junction, the North & West route, the North Wales Coast, Newbury (or Westbury) to Penzance, Salisbury-Exeter to name but a few routes, which could lay claim to being main lines. And several of the the routes being scrutinised in the North of England for further wiring are far from main lines. Why don't we just give up now and build more diesels instead...

Phased introduction of electric trains? As the wires reach the next suitable place, withdraw some more diesel trains and introduce the new electric. Of course this means dragging out life-expired diesel trains a few more years to allow the wires to be put up but you get the full benifits once the wires are up. Well you seem quite happy to drag out life-exprired electrics forever, so what's the problem with similar diesels? Or are you now advocating buying new diesels to run for a few years before electrics arrive?

You keep asserting that bi-modes damage the case for wires. Others of us think they help it, as it allows the spread of electric operation in a staged way. So when you have wired the whole route, move the bi-modes to another route that can benefit from a mix of electric and diesel operation.

I do see a problem with running more coaches than necessary beyond Oxford, but I also. Also, I don't rule out bi-mode when it is a choice of that or diesel, or a change of train. Then the options need to be carefully weighed up. But with the Great Western and East Coast Intercity networks, I really think that the vast majority could have been running straight-electric trains by the end of 2025, hence my objection to bi-mode INTERCITY trains.

I don't think portion working is an answer either, particularly as it means an extra 26 meters of wasted train length when sets are running in multiple.

But you also what? Despite being asked, by me and others, to explain what you do about different levels of demand on different sections of a route, you still haven't given us a straight answer, just bluster about portion working not being a good idea. So what is a good idea to handle this situation?

In case you hadn't noticed FGW's HSTs are having yet another life-extension overhaul. To keep them going until the middle of the next decade would require at least one more such round of work, if not two, given their age. Some of us would quite like to see some new trains a while before that.

No evidence for that, that's no what I've been trying to say. The DfT's policy, evidenced by the draft layouts, is to give standard a trolley only. FirstGW may well object to that, or they may be happy with providing the Pullman service to First class passengers only on IEP. I'm not making any claims either way regarding what FirstGW want, but DfT have gone for trolley in standard. FirstGW can ask DfT to change it, but will they? And if so, will DfT listen?

No evidence, other than the facts on the ground of the on-board service model that has been developed by FGW in the past eight years under Andrew Haines and then Mark Hopwood. DfT's policy is stated in black and white in the GW invitation to tender and the technical specification for IEP - that operators could ask for catering arrangements to suit their needs and that Agility Trains is required to offer four options for catering provision, everything from full restaurant provision to a trolley - and that the trains would be capable of being reconfigured should a change of operator bring about a change in what provision was required.

As for DfT agreement to something more than a trolley, which Transport Secretary is going to want to go down in history as being the person who killed the Pullman restaurant car in favour of a trolley? Though if Arriva wins the long-term franchise, they probably won't get a choice in the matter.

Exactly, least worst option. Of all the IC125s they could have replaced with a 180 to cover for overhaul, they chose this one. If that was the least worst option, replacing any other IC125 diagram with an 180 would have been even worse.

I don't deny that FirstGW had no choice, but if you can't replace any IC125 diagram with a 180 without causing problems then the only INTERCITY trains on Great Western you can replace with a single 5-car IEP without problems are the class 180 diagrams other than the busy one that would be an IC125 if they had one available. 5-car is too short to replace 2+8.

Sorry, a five-car IEP will have 40 to 50 more seats than a 180, so would probably just about get away with the loads leaving Oxford on the service in question on most days (and lots of people get off at Hanborough, which is seven minutes out of Oxford, so not the end of the world standing for that time) and with IEP the train would be able to be formed of a double-set east of Oxford. And off-peak Cheltenham services would most certainly not be formed of HSTs right now if there were more 180s available to FGW.

Yes, but they don't need many 180s do they? And I'm not saying the new trains all need to be 600-seat trains, just that they need a minimum of 7 coaches (but some 9-car ones are probably going to be needed).

No they don't just need 180s, nor do they just need an HST replacement that seats hundreds more passengers than a 180. Again, what is your cunning plan for the GW express services that do not need 450, 500, 550, 600 or more seats on all or part of their journeys?

And in the peaks, a 450-seat, seven-coach train - fewer seats than any current FGW HST - is going to be rather less use than 2x5-car formations with 650 seats.

In what way? Your last-minute passenger is only actually going to be a problem at the point where the trains divide, when, as I said, even if a train has a corridor connection, it is not going to be connected any more, so is irrelevant. Or are we now going to run the railway for people who turn up at the last minute and can't grasp information about platform numbers, position of the train at one end of a platform, etc? You are making a mountain out of a molehill. Again.

I have used the Cambrian line service to Aberystwyth on a number of occasions. As it happens, I've always been at Shrewsbury in plenty of time and waited at the Aberystwyth end of the platform, but if I was cutting it fine I wouldn't worry about being in the wrong portion and jump on the nearest coach, knowing I could just walk forwards through the train before Machynlleth to get into the right portion before the split. If they didn't have corridor connections and I got on the wrong portion, I'd worry about missing the right one when I got off and having two hours to wait for the next one. With the Cotswolds line, which I haven't used, it'd only be an hour to wait rather than two, but the point still stands.

No it doesn't, because you could get off and walk down the platform at Oxford, just the same as you can at Machynlleth now during the stops there. You could even ask a member of staff which is the right portion, if you're worried. I suspect they might say something remarkable like 'when we arrive at Oxford, get out and walk up the platform to get on one of the five coaches at the front'. Information which will no doubt also be provided by the screens, automated announcements and announcements by traincrew.

Fundamentally, what all this boils down to is your continued opposition to the very idea of the IEP. It must be about time to revive your previous notions of 91s and Mk4s on Great Western and decrepit Class 47s dragging emus west of Oxford.

And it is good to see that the IEP design is modular so that the diesel engine modules can be removed at a later date, if ongoing electrification reduces the need for bi-modes.

I agree. Virtually everything on the railways is a compromise (e.g. no train has the same number of passengers and the same line speed throughout its journey, so someone needs to make a trade off between top speed/ capacity). Bi-mode seems to be better than the alternatives, so I'm in favour.

You can hardly accuse us of delaying electrification at the moment - but it can't all be done at the same time. Every bit wired improves the case for the next bit (look at how Bolton to Wigan is being done, now Manchester - Bolton - Preston has been committed to).

Obviously a lot of people are against bi-mode - some of them have vested interests for not wanting it to happen - but you need to explain your concerns better.

In a world where we want energy efficiency everywhere, why would you build something that wastes energy constantly dragging dead weight around?

The expense has been covered before - most of it is because its funded through PFI (which presumably any alternative stock would have to be funded through - i..e its not directly related to the trains themselves).

Yes, you have to drag fuel tanks under the wires. Which is a lot more efficient than running full diesel services under the wires (or building new locomotives for the sake of doing two "drags" a day). Compared to the overall weight of the 260 metre long train, the fuel tanks really aren't as significant as some people make out - did you ditch the spare wheel from your car as it's "dead weight"?

And like I said in a world where energy efficiency is the new buzz phrase a new train that wastes energy all the time doesn't really fit the green agenda!

You are taking the IEP in isolation, though. In an ideal world bi-modes wouldn't be needed, as all of the lines it'll ever need to travel on would be electrified, and all diesels would never be travelling under the wires. However, that's just not ever going to be the case, and the problem will be especially bad before the project has been completed. I really don't see how any of the alternatives would be any more energy efficient! Especially when any proposals not involving bi-modes would mean the introduction of new trains would have to be delayed/staggered, meaning life-increases for the HSTs, which a) require lots of energy in themselves to carry out, and b) mean that far less efficient trains keep running for several more years.

Plus you seem unwilling to understand why prices done under PFI looks more expensive as they cover lifetime expenses rather than just upfront costs, and the fact that any non-bi-mode trains would have to be procured through the same process and therefore would seem similarly expensive.

No - I think that its the least bad option - don't try to make me sound like a "fanboy" - if someone can come up with a better realistic* alternative then I'll revise my opinion

(* - and by "realistic" I mean that if IEP has to be funded by PFI then presumably an alternative has to too - would be unfair to compare the PFI inflated costs of purchasing IEP with a contract that includes maintenance to the naked cost of buying an alternative train)

Frankly none of those routes are actually main lines with the exception of XC and possibly the Penzance line.
Suburban schemes are different but then there aren't really that many suburban schemes left to do either after the already committed ones.

As to 'giving up', I would much rather have an entirely electric railway but Bi-mode is just going to strangle the programme, why on earth would you electrify Swindon-Gloucester... how many trains does it actually have on it?

You gain nothing in network effects because bi-mode makes them irrelevent.

The basis of your argument is that the idea that the DfT do not want to carry out (more-or-less) full electrification of our rail network. We don't agree with that premise and that's why we don't agree that bi-mode will kill further electrification. Diesel running at the end under bi-mode is still diesel running and still less efficient and more polluting than electric trains. We aren't going to buy new diesel-only units and most of these are still going to run mostly not under the wires so bi-mode isn't going to help them either as the electric bit would be wasted.

It may be less efficient and marginally more polluting but the difference is so small as no to be worth worrying about, especially considering the enormous cost of electrifying the edges of the network.

We aren't going to buy new diesel-only units and most of these are still going to run mostly not under the wires so bi-mode isn't going to help them either as the electric bit would be wasted.

The electric part is cheap.
You don't actually have to fit the main transformers and pantograph gear if the train is not being used on OLE equippedl ines, see the Class 450s and 444s as an example of this.

And most major stations which are the end points for the vast majority of services (or are at elast on them) will have OLE so almost all services will be at least partially 'under the wires'.

There is precisely one fleet of trains which are being designed for bi-mode operation at this point in time - my point about a bi-mode regional IEP is that the power packs can be reused for other trains on other routes.

Although the post-privatisation diesels can be cascaded away to the un-electrified parts of the network to replace the pre-privatisation units, are there genuinely enough of them to manage all the routes you so strongly believe will be left un-electrified forever? Passenger numbers are only going to increase across the network so you're going to need more and more units for the same tracks as we have now. There are officially no plans for regional or commuter bi-modes so are they going to build more diesel-only trains for these routes? ROSCOs aren't going to finance any more of them today so why would they do that later on? The point of spending the extra on bi-mode is that on the GW and EC mainlines they will spend a significant proportion of their running lives under the wires on the fastest and most fuel-hungry parts of their diagrams, whereas for the trains trundling around Cornwall you say this is never going to be the case. Bi-mode trains are even more expensive than diesels which are more expensive than pure electric so the cost of not electrifying the outer reaches will be high when the trains need replacing. As a result the majority of trains on the network will still remain as electric or diesel only so the network effect will still apply for everything other than the proportion of the IEP fleet which will be bi-mode. Even then, the powerpacks can be taken away at minimal cost and difficulty which will leave them as identical to the electric trains they will run alongside. Hitachi had originally planned to put the diesel engines in an end power car in their diesel and bi-mode IEPs - if this were still the case then your argument would have more sway as you would have to deal with the power cars which were going to be much more difficult to convert to passenger or revenue earning space.

And in any case, what else would the Treasury want to spend it on? It's investment which makes the country more efficient and reduces our dependence on fossil fuels. Are they really going to want to spend it on road schemes instead? We're not building any more motorways and airports are controversial wherever they are in the country. The only transport investment which is uncontroversial is the general idea of public transport across the country. Electrifying more is one of the best things they can do to make the public transport across the country cleaner, faster and more reliable so that's why they're doing it now and that's why they've got no reason to stop doing so any time soon. When we're left with nothing more to do than Kyle or Mallaig then we can think of more reopenings and redoublings. The Swiss certainly don't have a problem with an entirely electrified standard gauge network.

Might another way of looking at Bi Mode be what is the difference in weight between a full diesel (running part of the route under the wires) and a bi mode with a Transformer and Pantograph.

A lot of the anti bi-mode compares electric with bi-mode and sees the engines as pure penalty

Swindon-Gloucester will have an hourly service with IEP. It is also part of the diversionary route when the Severn Tunnel is closed, but if XC wiring happens, then it is a logical infill extension, as would be Gloucester to Severn Tunnel junction, allowing conversion of lots of passenger and freight workings between Wales and the West Midlands, which otherwise would have to stick with diesel or require bi-mode units...

If that's not a 'Network Effect', then tell me what is?

Since a large scale adoption of electric freight seems doubteful in the near future I somehow doubt freight makes a difference.
But Most of those routes don't have a dozen vehicles per hour which is the density you need for electrification to make sense.

Swindon-Gloucester will have an hourly service with IEP.

Since any bi-mode sets won't care, diversionary routes are even less worth electrifying than they used to be, since only electric sets will need haulage, which in this case can probably be provided by simply coupling a bi-mode set into the formation and shoving.

And what disadvantage do Bi-mode units have?
The IEP figures shown off by the DfT demonstrate that the difference in cost between an electric train and a bi-mode one is marginal, and unlikely to make up for the enormous capital investment required for electrification. Especially the low maintenance requirements of a modern deisel that will never be taxed particularily hard and only be used for a small low speed section of the route.

I read that and thought: "now there's a good idea". And I do like the idea, but then I engaged brain.

Firstly, assuming the regional bi-mode fleet needs to be arround 148 carriages to replace the SWT and Cardiff-Portsmouth 158s fleets there might not be enough diesel engines released (depending on how fast electrification teams work).
Secondly, the diesel lumps intended for IEP are rather big ones, 700hp a peice was it, or was it 700kw? Maybe a bit over powered for a regional unit, but concerns have been raised on the WNXX fourm that engines that big might only just fit under the floor, so they might be to big to install in another type of train.
Thirdly, the ideal date for introduction of the new regional bi-mode trains would probably be arround 2019 (is that a realistic lead time to build a train fleet?) as it would then be able to help with TSI-PRM compliance. That would be before any further GWML electrification (though given that I don't think ICEC needs bi-mode at all there could be those engines available I suppose).

I agree that bi-mode can be a good compromise. However, I think it needs to be considered much more carefully, and as part of a longer-term plan, than it has been. East Coast just doesn't have the critical mass of diesel-worked services to make a diesel train fleet worthwhile in my opinon, especially if, as seems likely, Hull and Harrogate are electrified by 2025. If you merged the fleet with MML services though, as I keep going on about, you might make it work. There's also the question of what to prioritise for electrification, the Cotswolds line falls low on the list because some of the Intercity frequency goes to Worcester but some of that continues to Hereford, so you can't convert the full hourly service without doing a bit that's not hourly, and it's a fair long way. Hence, for that route, bi-mode seems to make sense. Swindon-Cheltenham and Bristol-Weston-Super-Mare however give an hourly London service for comparitively short extensions of electrification, which is why I think they should be 2020-2024 schemes with IEP introduction defered so they can get electric rather than bi-mode units.

When I said giving the DFT the ability to extend the electrification process, I meant extend the time frames. Bi-mode trains gives them an excuse to electrify less quickly.
Or to move the routes operated using bi-modes further down the list then they would otherwise be based on frequency, amount of diesel burned etc. That'd still be delaying for some routes, but might bring less-worthy routes to the front of the queue.

Well you seem quite happy to drag out life-exprired electrics forever, so what's the problem with similar diesels? Or are you now advocating buying new diesels to run for a few years before electrics arrive?
Perfectly happy to see a few IC125s made to stagger on a year or two longer if it means they can be replaced with electric rather than bi-mode IEPs.

You keep asserting that bi-modes damage the case for wires. Others of us think they help it, as it allows the spread of electric operation in a staged way. So when you have wired the whole route, move the bi-modes to another route that can benefit from a mix of electric and diesel operation.
That's fine if the policy maker intends to do that and can think of a (series of) logical place(s) to move the bi-modes to. I don't trust the government to do either at present, especially as I can't think of many logical things to do with the bi-modes. The obvious ones are XC and Midland Main Line, but MML will mostly need electrics and might be wired and in need of new stock before 2020 (though EC doesn't need that many bi-modes and as I've said before, a shared fleet could work wonders there). That leaves XC, which has relatively new Voyagers and is also the obvious place to send the 222s to. Next I fall back to Glasgow/Edingburgh - Aberdeen/Inverness, and actually, a 5-car bi-mode might give enough capacity up there? My one concern with that is the fuel consumption of an IEP compared to the current stock, but then again wasn't there a romour of using Voyagers? Not much in it if that's the alternative.

Despite being asked, by me and others, to explain what you do about different levels of demand on different sections of a route, you still haven't given us a straight answer, just bluster about portion working not being a good idea. So what is a good idea to handle this situation?
On a regional route with no need for buffets, first class or running faster than 110mph, probably portion working (with units with end corridor connections). On PAD-Cotswolds, I don't think there is a good answer that will please everyone. The operationally correct answer is to make the passengers change to a shorter train, except when a long train right through can be justified, but I accept that is probably not acceptable to passengers. And so I have to resort to suggesting a mix of 9-car on the busier services and 7/8-car on quieter runs. Not a good answer I know, but I don't think there is one.

As for DfT agreement to something more than a trolley, which Transport Secretary is going to want to go down in history as being the person who killed the Pullman restaurant car in favour of a trolley?
But they won't necessarily have killed Pullman service, just restricted it to first class passengers.

And off-peak Cheltenham services would most certainly not be formed of HSTs right now if there were more 180s available to FGW.
What would they do in the peaks, park the 180 somewhere and bring out an IC125 that has been parked in the sidings during the off-peak?

And, by my reckoning, a 2+8 low-density IC125 has 474 seats, whereas taking the composite coach out of an 8-car IEP would give you 471 seats. I didn't pick out 7-car IEP out of the air as a minimum train length, I chose it because it provides almost equal capacity to the current trains. You'd need longer IEPs in the mix as well, but if my seating capacity spreadsheet is correct 7-car IEP would be comparable to current trains and therefore might be useful if you can keep them away from peak services. If you can't keep any diagrams away from the peaks, then everything really will need to be 9-car.

I suspect they might say something remarkable like 'when we arrive at Oxford, get out and walk up the platform to get on one of the five coaches at the front'.
So, do they hold the other portion and make it late while everyone who got in the wrong coach does this? With through corridor connections, you can get everyone in the correct portion before the train stops moving so you don't need to worry about that.

Nope, not going to start suggesting loco-drags of EMUs on the Cotswolds again, that's the one route where Intercity bi-mode seems to make sense (unless you don't get enough passengers west of Oxford to justify running through London services). As for 91s on Great Western, it's the only possible home I see for them other than the ECML, but I've decided the case for keeping them is probably stronger on the ECML so that's where I'm focusing.

If you are as bothered about "energy" as your posts suggest, then surely replacing the longest "diesel under the wire" services with bi-mode makes sense?

At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious, the 68s are being ordered for something. If you purloin them for "drags" then you have to order replacement freight locos to fill the gap of whatever the FOC intended the 68s for.

I have to say, I'm curious as to why people seem to think we have to keep using units until they're life-expired. It really isn't necessarily the cheapest way to do things in the long-run, and it just seems a bit like longevity for the sake of 'common sense', which I tend to find is all-too common and rarely makes much sense.

The problem with meeting the current number of seats is that it allows zero room for passenger growth.

I can see the logic in having a mixture of 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 coach sets (missing out any lengths which weren't required) to meet demand, however in doing so it would make it a lot more likely that if there were a problem that the wrong length set would need to be sent out and/or more spare sets would be needed.

But Most of those routes don't have a dozen vehicles per hour which is the density you need for electrification to make sense.

The IEP figures shown off by the DfT demonstrate that the difference in cost between an electric train and a bi-mode one is marginal, and unlikely to make up for the enormous capital investment required for electrification. Especially the low maintenance requirements of a modern deisel that will never be taxed particularily hard and only be used for a small low speed section of the route.

You really are the prophet of doom, aren't you? If we take all that lot at face value, then why are we even bothering to electrify anything when we could just buy lots of shiny new diesels and keep everything crossed that the price of oil doesn't go up for another 30 years?

Rhydgaled, throughout all your changes of tack and musings about Class 91s, 222s and everything else on steel wheels coming to the Great Western, one thing is clear. You still hate the idea of IEP, in any form, and even though it is on its way, you continue to make a fuss about the most trivial things, portion working being the current flavour of the month.

I have pointed out all that has been said on the record by DfT about catering provision on IEP but still you bluster on about it.

You have been told many times about the differences between peak and off-peak loadings and contra-peak loadings (that's loadings on trains running in the opposite direction to the main peak flows, which are usually lower). That is why, before 2009 and then again once the 180s returned to FGW, they work on trains running against the main peak flows. So out to Worcester and Malvern from London at 05.48 and 06.48, while everything going towards London on the Cotswold Line is an HST - that pattern reverses in the evening peak. The same kind of thing happened with Cheltenham services up to 2009.

Building new trains that have no more passenger capacity than current stock isn't a great idea for Great Western, where growth is continuing and forecast to keep doing so. Growth which has already led to the the extension of 2+7 sets to 2+8s and saw the five 180s brought back to free Turbos to help in the Thames Valley. The average passenger really couldn't care less how many cabs there are on a 2x5-car formation, what they care about is what are the odds of them getting a seat.

Which is also, apparently, now under consideration for electrification, along with Hull and Harrogate. Maybe 10 years of bi-mode then take the engines out could work, but the bi-mode might actually only be needed for 5 years.

I don't disagree with that. What I'm saying is there is so little running away from the wires (and lots of running under them) on the East Coast franchise that I don't think there's enough off-wire services to warrant a diesel or bi-mode fleet, just an all-electric one.

What have the 68s been ordered for though? It sounds as if they are designed, at least in part, to do a better job than 67s on the passenger work 67s currently do. As such, perhaps DRS will be bidding for contracts currently handled by 67s, so there'd be spare 67s for use if DRS take over with the 68s.

Not entirely true. I wouldn't have a problem with 9-car straight-electrics with no diesel engines whatsoever replacing IC125s. We need replacements for the IC125s but I don't want the railway to be moving in the wrong direction in terms of passenger comfort and efficiency. I've given up on the issue of the engines in 'electric' sets because there seems to be strong support for the benifits that provides despite the huge drawbacks.

Whatever happened to your off-peak loadings and contra-peak loadings? Can you, or can you not, diagram units so they are on contra-peak or off-peak workings all day everyday? If you can ensure some diagrams are quieter throughout, then you can use trains with the same capacity as the current ones on the quieter diagrams and 9-car units on the busier diagrams. If not, and every diagram contains at least one peak working, then everything probably does need to be 9-car.

Well, the odds of getting a seat in a 5-car would be much worse than the odds of getting a seat on a 7-car or 9-car.

Compared to a 9-car IEP, the odds of getting a seat on a 2x5-car IEP (10-cars) would be:
  • Pretty much equal if you have the enterance to the platform between the two units
  • Worse than the 9-car if the entrance to the platform is at one end of the train and the passenger goes with the flow and boards the nearest unit
  • Perhaps better than the 9-car if the entrance to the platform is at one end of the train and the passenger boards the far unit, but not if you're using portion working because most of the passengers who don't turn up at the last minute will get in the correct portion.
Therefore, I would suggest that the majority of passengers would have a worse chance of getting a seat out of Paddington with a 2x5-car than with a single 9-car set.

Why none whatsoever? You even disagree with the one/two engines they will have to allow depot movements, and emergency power when the wires fall etc?

Yes I do, why lumber the train with some of the disadvatages of diesel traction if you are hardly going to use the diesel powerplant? But, I've lost any hope of sorting that aspect. I'm just going to leave it and hope they realise their mistake and remove them at the end of the 10 year engine lease.

The benefit of bi-mode trains (as I see it) is that it greatly simplifies the logistics of getting electrification done. As it stands when electrifying a mainline route in one go you have to electrify the mainline and all of the branches that you intend to serve with electric traction. Getting the money for all of the branches out of the treasury is often difficult and usually compromises have to be made. This then means that one or more branches get dropped from the project, but God forbid you try to touch their through services and replace it with a connecting diesel. This then means that you either have to run a diesel service under the wires (and continue to operate a diesel mainline fleet alongside your shiny new electric trains) or manage loco dragged services; given that all of the TOCs who did this have since stopped one can infer that it's more hassle than it's worth.

If you're running a train service where electrification is a work in progress then bi-mode makes perfect sense: you get the vast majority of the benefits of electric operation as the wires are switched on and spread.

Will it mean that some branches that would have probably been electrified sooner are left unwired for longer? Almost certainly, yes. But the electrification crews who would've been doing those branches will instead be moved on to the next major scheme instead of spending valuable time on 1tp2h or less branch services, or seeing the whole project canned because of an impasse with the combination of financing of the electrification, financing & procurement the trains, and satisfying the service users.

Imagine, if you will, that everything in the diagram below AND the Thames Valley branches had to have been electrified before the electrification team could start on the MML (although if that were the case then I think that we could assume that MML electrification would've come before the GWML)

In addition, to the best of my knowledge IEP is the world's first EDMU and is therefore a valuable R&D project.

There is a huge fleet of regional EDMUs in France and has been for years.

Those branches are probably never going to be wired because the Treasury will see them as a waste of money.

I think that the branches will get wired, but bi-mode gives us the luxury of being able to focus resources on other areas with better cost/benefit ratios in the meantime (e.g. after wiring to Swansea on the GWML we could target branches off the ECML/ MML/ WCML like Hull, Matlock and Chester before we come back to tackle Swansea to Carmarthen).

Bi-mode means not having to do everything at once.

Are you seriously arguing that we're so short of metal that we need to hang on to trains we no longer need or want economically because metal is that short of supply?

If it was, we wouldn't be able to afford new trains. In the grand scheme of things, we'll waste a lot more resources trying to keep them going.
