I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I haven't done an extensive search for the answer - the current IEP order provides 596 carriages for East Coast and Great Western to presumably replace the class 41 hauled trains, with Wikipedia making reference to further IEP orders for East Coast, which I'm assuming will replace the class 91 hauled trains - assuming that the 91's would be about 35 years old by then, is there a potential move to the (by then) newly electrified Midland Mainline (even perhaps some CrossCountry routes) as an interim step until new more suitable electric stock can be sourced be possible ?

There's nothing official on replacing 91+Mk4s on the ECML other than there being the option to do so with IEP but there are several other options also around. That being said if the 91s and their Mk4s are completely replaced by IEP or something else then cascading them to either the MML or the GEML has certainly been mentioned on here as a strong possibility. However, I do not think that anything official has been mentioned on the possibly fate for those trains if/when they're replaced.

Should IEP displace the 91s, I would imagine the best option would be to split the fleet approximately 60/40 between MML and GE, with some new-build EMUs supplementing these for stopping services. The logical option would be to simply treat the MK3 and MK4 rakes to a heavy life-extension programme to see them through until the 2030s, with Traxx and new DVTs to go with them, but I can't see that happening, really.

Short form them to get better acceleration then have them run Transpennine North!

:)

Actually class 43's hauling five carriages was considered as cascade option for TPE north when IEP started arriving before electrification was announced im told.
