Identifying class 180s full class number

I saw a Grand Central class 180 today at King's Cross but I couldn't find the last 3 digits of its class number. Similar to a 455 the 180/1 was painted on the side of the carriages.

I'm pretty sure it's this 1D91 1150 London Kings Cross to Halifax which would make it 180102.

Any ideas as to where the full number is written on the train?

Just noticing as I put this into my trainspotting app that the picture they have has the number written on the front by the coupling, but I am pretty certain it wasn't there on this train so perhaps it has been removed?

The numbers might have fallen off or been removed and it's not unusual to see some trains in this condition.

Strictly speaking, the class number is fully shown, i.e., Class 180.

In the absence of the unit number, the best thing to do is grab one of the carriage numbers and assuming it's not a mixed formation, then it's not too difficult to find which unit it is.

What do you use for this?

I usually use train logger. It’s updated on a semi-regular basis, and as long as you’ve got at least 2 carriage numbers it’s easy enough to figure out which unit you’re looking at

Several years ago, the set number was on a panel that covered the coupler. In recent times, that panel seems to have been removed.

Not any more. I think, at most, 2 sets are misformed with a single coach from each reversed.

I think the truth is given the small fleet size they're not particularly bothered. Any staff member who needs to know will know from vehicle numbers or inside the cab. In recent times there have been units running with the electrical box cover obviously swapped between units, as it had a completely different set number painted on it to any of the vehicles actually in the set.

I'm on 180101 at King's Cross, all the cars are "01" numbered, yet the London end driving car, coach B, has 180105 painted below the coupling in oldish paint, nothing on the north end coupling though.

The GC sets have been mix and matched for a while because a group of carriages that were collectively considered to be 180103 spent a while at Ilford. Now that that set is back, carriages are progressively being swapped back into original formations. Bear in mind that parts (especially those electrical connection covers) can also be swapped between sets if required
