Most journeys take about 17-20 minutes (Oxford to Charlbury), if all services could run at 17 minutes then it would be possible to get 4tph as the single line section is only from Charlbury East junction to Wolvercot Junction, however services would have to be exactly on time with no delays at all so would not be a very reliable service
Perhaps either a passing loop or partial double tracking would allow a service to operate at 2tph each way
No it wouldnt be possible at 17 minutes as you have ignored single line reoccupation and signalling, you would need to do the section in 10 minutes or less. Even then it would be a performance risk.

Could the Cotswolds line between Worcester and Evesham see an increase in services to every half hour by extending 1 Snow Hill line train each hour (if a second service every hour could not be achieved on the single line between Charlbury and Oxford). This would allow Evesham to have a more attractive service to Worcester with direct Trains to Birmingham (though via the longer route) and allow Stourbridge and Kidderminster better services south with a single change at Worcestershire Parkway.

In my humble opinion the line from Oxford to Hereford should be doubled throughout. The line should be resignalled and upgraded to allow for faster speeds and more frequent trains. The line has seen significant growth but has seen very little in the way of upgrades.

With the right line speeds I would like it to be upgraded to have off-peak 2tph to Worcester 1 of which continues to Great Malvern and a Hereford extension every 2 hours with a fastest journey time to Hereford on 2 hours 40 minutes

There's talk in the local papers of restoring the route from Honeybourne to Stratford and providing an Evesham to Birmingham service that way, surely that's more speculative than redoubling the existing line?

The opening of Worcestershire Parkway will reduce the capacity on the stretch from Norton Junction to Evesham, unless calls at Worcestershire Parkway or Pershore are omitted. Services are currently timed to spend just under 13 minutes on the single line section (for instance, passing Norton Junction at 10:17 to arrive at Evesham at 10:30). A half hourly service without the line being redoubled and allowing for delays seems infeasible to me.

The Honeybourne-Stratford line could be reopened, however there would be a difficult gap to reinstate in Stratford now occupied by a road. Technically possible as it was subject to a feasibility study by the local CC but deemed too expensive.

I think the benefits of reopening the line would definitely be worth it. Stratford would be much more attractive for people travelling from the South West. The CC would surely be able to recoup some of the money spent on the project from additional tourists coming into the area! West Midlands Combined Authority should be pushing for this project to happen.

There are serious proposals to redouble Wolvercote-Hanborough, perhaps even with electrification to Hanborough for 387s, plus increased car parking to serve as a parkway for Witney and the new Eynsham garden village. Hanborough-Charlbury appears to have fallen by the wayside.

Could this not happen all day as the line south of Moreton-in-Marsh always seams to be busy, especially when 5 carriage class 800's operate the services

That's been my experience, always busy on that section.

On a related subject is there any particular reason why the last train is the 21.48 from Paddington? I'd have thought an area relatively close to London would be deserving of a later service at least as far as Moreton in Marsh.

There is now a late train on Fridays (23.20 from Paddington). I suspect GWR are assessing how well that one loads before extending it through the week.

It was redoubled about 5 years ago!
The linespeeds are pretty high!

Some additional track was provided between Oxford and Worcester, but the line is by no means double track throughout, not does it need to be. Part of the problem accommodating more services at some of the smaller stations at the east end of the route over and above the single parliamentary in each direction they receive today is that they are located on the remaining single track section, which clearly extends the occupancy of journeys that call, but providing a second platform and appropriate access routes would be prohibitively expensive at ALL of Hanborough, Combe and Finstock stations. Extending double track from Oxford out as far as Hanborough would be a very useful compromise. A double track station layout for the main line could be built at Hanborough with an additional bay at the east or a west end turnback siding provided. That would provide capacity for better local services as far as Hanborough, and flexibility and resilience for all Cotswold services. Shortening of the single line might also allow a handful of additional daily calls at Combe and Finstock, but I don't think a regular interval all day service would ever be justified at these stations. If full doubling throughout this section is ever proposed some long term value decision needs to be made regarding the minor stops. Some more frequent local buses serving the area and offering guaranteed connections with trains at Hanborough or Charlbury could serve far more people far better than the current very poor rail offering.

The line between Hereford and Malvern Wells certainly needs to be doubled. As does the line from Worcester to Evesham. With more and faster services the line could see significant growth with commuters heading for London. The line is just painfully slow.

Where would the parking go? On google it looks like they are building houses in the most obvious place for a big car park....

No, as a group called the Cotswold Line Taskforce - rail industry, local authorities, etc - has been looking at exactly this kind of thing for a couple of years and will publish a report before the end of this year on the how the route could be improved and what it might cost. So not really crayonista territory.

Anybody know the date the report will be published?

Few delays for various reasons. Task force board was due to meet last week, so hopefully not long now.

I thought that GWR were planning 2 trains per hour on the Cotswolds line (1 stopping and 1 semi-fast), if this did happen then at least one end would have to be redoubled in order to operate a reliable service.

A taskforce involving the rail industry, local authorities and user groups is due to report any time now on proposals for the future development of the route, But without more double track at the Oxford end of the line and on the section between Worcester and Evesham, is is simply not possible to run a robust 2 trains per hour service - and that assumes it would wash its face financially, as loadings west of Moreton-in-Marsh are far lower than to the east.

There's a de-facto 2tph in the peaks, as some of the Oxford terminators are extended to Moreton-in-Marsh.

Up to a point. In the mornings it is only in the direction of Oxford, while the afternoon service requires some very punctual running all round in both directions to get trains through between Charlbury and Oxford without mayhem ensuing.
IETs certainly help in this respect. The 17.38 from Moreton-in-Marsh had hardly ever left on time from the day it first appeared in the timetable, due to delays on the outbound run as the 15.50 from Paddington when it was an HST - slam doors being the key bugbear. The instant an IET took over, it started to reach Moreton-in-Marsh on time or just after (despite a couple of current temporary speed restrictions between Shipton and Moreton-in-Marsh) and on time departures back to London are pretty much guaranteed now.

Could this not happen all day as the line south of Moreton-in-Marsh always seams to be busy, especially when 5 carriage class 800's operate the services

No, the infrastructure can't handle 2tph reliably with any margin for late running. When the Wilderness Festival is taking place at Charlbury in the summer, GWR does extend some Oxford terminators out to Moreton-in-Marsh to boost capacity, but the service has usually fallen apart at some point in the day due to late running - it may work better in future if IETs are being used, with their better acceleration easing issues with late running and single-line occupancy, but as things stand it is simply not a sustainable proposition on a regular basis.

In my humble opinion the line from Oxford to Hereford should be doubled throughout. The line should be resignalled and upgraded to allow for faster speeds and more frequent trains. The line has seen significant growth but has seen very little in the way of upgrades.

Bit hard to redouble the tunnels at Ledbury and Colwall, as they both have single-track bores.

I don't know how much faster you think it should be. Oxford to Ascott-under-Wychwood is 100mph, Shipton to Moreton-in-Marsh 90mph, Moreton-Evesham 75mph (could be mostly made up to 90mph without much trouble but Aston Magna curve is a permanent 60mph limit and won't change) and it's mostly 90-95mph from Evesham to Worcester. With all the station stops along the way, there would be little to be gained by increasing speed limits except perhaps Moreton-Evesham. I don't know what the ruling limit is Ledbury to Hereford but that's the only other place any changes would be possible, given the limitations imposed by getting through the Malvern hills and negotiating Worcester.

Some? 15 miles more in both directions to give 32 miles of double track in the middle of the line, leaving single-track sections roughly nine miles each at the ends.

While Finstock and Combe would probably bite the dust in the event of full redoubling - and no one would ever suggest more frequent calls as the two stations are a long way from the places they purport to serve - in the case of Combe there already is an hourly bus service through the village to and from Oxford most of the day. Anyone in Finstock who wants more choice of trains will go to Charlbury anyway.

I have no idea why on earth you make the claim that it would be prohibitively expensive to reopen the second platform at Hanborough - though you then go on to almost immediately contradict yourself. Much of the existing disused structure could probably be brought back to life quite easily looking at its current condition (and it was inspected only last year as part of the taskforce's work I mentioned above and other work being done by Oxfordshire County Council on transport provision around Oxford). An extension has just been provided on the existing platform that more than doubled its length.

Where would the parking go? On google it looks like they are building houses in the most obvious place for a big car park....

For starters you could add a Chiltern-style steel deck on part of the existing main car park (ie the one off Main Road, which is on higher ground above the station, not the limited spaces that can be seen from trains - Google's satellite appears to have passed overhead on a Sunday, so there are hardly any cars in the big car park).

The housing site south of the railway was designed to allow for car parking for rail passengers - lots of it, all along the boundary with the railway cutting, and there is also land set aside opposite the station that could be used for a station building and a car and bus drop-off/pick-up too. There is a site plan at the end of this travel plan prepared by the developers showing an indicative layout for the car parking, with the white area between set aside for turning space/future staton facilities. Whether any section 106 planning gain money has been set aside from this and other developments around Hanborough to pay for the car park etc, I don't know.

I didn't say that. I suggested it would be prohibitively expensive to install double platforms at ALL of the stations on the current single line section. Choosing one to develop and closing the other two seems the most sensible course of action long term if that is possible. Hanborough is certainly the best of the three in terms of its location on the local road network and is the one with frequent services today. As the nearest of the three to Oxford it also fits nicely with an interim strategy to just extend double track as far as Hanborough and leave the single track and its two minor station in situ beyond.

Sorry, I missed the word 'all' because I couldn't fathom why anyone would even begin to try to bracket Hanborough with Combe and Finstock in the first place - the only things they have in common are being in West Oxfordshire and on a single-line section of track.

Hanborough has been developed assiduously by FGW/GWR since 2006, when there were an estimated 70,000 journeys a year.

It is on an A-road, with a regular bus service running past the entrance, has 280 parking spaces (with options available to provide many more), saw 232,000 passenger journeys in 2017-18 (and 271,000 in 2015-16 before Oxford Parkway opened) in a community with new houses going up all around and is a sub-15-minute drive away for the almost 30,000 people now living in Witney. It is about to get a new station building, as well as a staff member on duty in the morning peak.

It is on another planet from two halts out in the fields and both a mile plus from the places they take their names from (Combe is actually closer to the western end of Long Hanborough than it is to the village of Combe), down in the Evenlode valley at the bottom of long drags of hills, with no car parking and nowhere to provide any, and with fewer than 4,000 journeys a year in total between them.

No one ever would suggest providing extra anything at Combe and Finstock - unless they are one of the hardcore half-dozen regular passengers at each station, numbers that would change little even if far more trains called. If BR hadn't cocked up its paperwork in 1994, both would have closed back then.

For information, we've merged two very similar threads on the Cotswold Line together to keep the discussion in one place.

Jimm whilst you make good points about many restraints in upgrading the line I see plenty of scope for improvement. I work this line daily. I'm forever being held at Ledbury and Malvern Wells. Whilst I fully accept the tunnels will always remain single line the rest of the line should see significant upgrades. Most trains are full and standing along this line throughout the day. Very rarely do I work a quiet train. The line should absolutely be doubled at Colwall and again it should be doubled Ledbury to Hereford. This will allow significant upgrades to the signalling to take place. Having to wait at Newlands for a train to clear Great Malvern is ridiculous.

West of Worcester - and certainly west of Great Malvern - isn't exactly the core section of the Cotswold Line and the GWR-operated services are hardly under pressure in terms of handing passenger numbers at the times of day they run between Hereford and Worcester. WMR services are, I accept, a different matter.

Everyone would like to see Network Rail's paralysis over what to do about the Worcester area - and beyond to Droitwich and Ledbury and Hereford - in terms of resignalling and track capacity brought to an end, but sadly there seems little sign of an end to this long-running farce.

In the short term, something as simple as the promised extra coaches on WMR services between Hereford and Birmingham would be a start in terms of meeting demand, but in terms of the task force report I don't know how much focus there will be on things west of Great Malvern, given that the GWR services are firmly in the minority now and would be all the more so if Birmingham-Hereford starts running as two trains per hour, so it will presumably be up to the Transport for West Midlands people to determine what is needed.

Gold-plated would be nice, but a loop at Colwall, another to break up the Ledbury-Shelwick Junction section, and an increase in the line speed west of Ledbury would probably do perfectly well.

Nothing meaningful will happen until Worcester moves from the Western to LNW routes which is planned at the back end of the year. Then some more development may happen.

What are the sensible, reasonable scope, changes to Worcester that “should” be made?
I am not talking electrification and dualling from Bromsgrove to a new West Worcester Parkway station etc.....

Should a crossover just north of Foregate Street (before the Droitwich Spa and Shrub Hill lines split) be installed to allow any service to use any platform. This would eliminate the need to wait (sometimes for a long time) at Henwick junction for a late running train in the other direction to pass, both on the WMR and GWR services.

Setting electrification aside, people do need to be talking about the entire area from Stoke Works junction at Bromsgrove through Worcester all the way to Shelwick junction outside Hereford, and from Worcester down to Norton and Abbotswood junctions.

For the simple reason that this is the area that has to be resignalled and when that is being done is the time to tear up the awful track layout left by 1970s and 1980s economy drives and create a railway with the capacity to meet reasonable expectations of future needs, as well as current ones.

A full body makeover is what's needed, not nips and tucks here and there, which is what things like installing the reversing signal for GWR trains on platform 1 at Foregate Street a few years ago and the apparently now imminent reopening of the Henwick turnback siding are.

Sort it all out properly and many of the constraints that currently impede GWR and WMR services through Worcester will be removed at long last, even if improved signalling and a better track layout can't do anything about where the two central (-ish in the case of Shrub Hill) stations are located.

If the Money could be found to do it would there be enough usage to double track the line from Oxford to Hanborough and electrify that section to have the two local trains that terminate at Didcot Parkway extend to Hanborough. With a larger car park Hanborough could then be a park and ride station for the local area and with these two services extended there there would be more capacity on trains which are often full by then, I know few people would use these services to go all the way to London as it would be quicker to get the fast service or change at Didcot or Reading but with an increase in frequency and if good connections to fast trains at Didcot could be made then people may use them.

If just a short section of line from Norton Junction until just before Worcestershire Parkway was doubled could WMR extend one of their Snow Hill line trains to Worcestershire Parkway each hour to provide better connections south for places like Kidderminster and Stourbridge without having to go via Birmingham. I know the long term timetable wants GWR to operate an hourly service to Kidderminster but this could be a good short term solution and with some re timetabling it may be possible without doubling anything.
