Ideas for a day trip from London

A quick question please. One of my treats is doing a railway jaunt on a Saturday on the ECML. The trains are normally nice and quiet, especially in first class, coming into London. I was going to do one this weekend but obviously not an option. Does anyone have any thoughts on how busy trains into London are on a Saturday on the WCML or from the West with GWR? Depends on weather and your tastes. And other possible engineering works!
Bath or Salisbury or Oxford if you are into architecture/cultural stuff...
