As you can probably imagine, being a student can be tough sometimes. But it's not the work I find hard (lowest score all year was 50; 40 is a pass). Or the clubbing (not least because I've never been!). Or even the inevitable money troubles (Uni's fault, not mine, so I'm getting help for the summer). Instead, my "beef" is with the lazy summer days of nothing. What are you supposed to do, work? When no-one with half a brain would hire an autistic student for two months (both parties would suffer)?

So my solution is to have some rail-based days out, like those I've been having semi-regularly since I left home. I've done South Wales, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Sheffield, Exeter, Reading, and more; and from Southend I've done Norwich and Cambridge. But I want to try somewhere new. Should I go to Cornwall? Or to Brighton? Or even to Liverpool? All three are just some of the ideas I've seriously contemplated during the last couple of months but have never gotten round to doing. Cornwall may be a tad too far (I would like to cover the entire county; I can skip St Ives in theory because I've done it but that and the Main Line from there to Liskeard are it!), while I am likely to go to Liverpool during my afore-mentioned holiday to Southport next week. That leaves Brighton; however, I've been there twice before and there's only such much seaside one can take (I did live in a seaside town for 20½ years)! But where else is there? I should say though, I would prefer any such suggestions to be manageable in one day so, sadly, many places I would otherwise consider - Edinburgh for example - are (probably?) a bit too far. Nonetheless, even remote suggestions would be welcomed and considered.

I know this sounds pathetic, but it could in theory benefit many people on here. If anyone has a suggestion, it would be most appreciated. And perhaps in future this (or a similar) thread could be used to promote any ideas for or experiences of days out for anyone, anywhere.

Thank you in advance :p

P.S.: I will hopefully be going to the Isle of Wight soon, so please consider this if you plan to post any suggestions from there.

Geordie back from exile.
How about a rover journey through the Yorkshire - Lancashire sort of area. For example a Lancashire Day Ranger gives the freedom of that particular area after 08:45 for £18 for an adult (with railcard discounts available). Might be a similar one available for Yorkshire. Should be do-able in a day from Bath. Just an idea though.

Also there is an East Midlands Day Ranger that could cover you for a trip to Lincoln. Not a bad place to visit for the day.

Somewhere I've always exploring a bit more of is the Peak District. Been through a few times just never really explored it.

It depends on if you like travelling by train or getting to a destination and getting about to do some "sight seeing"

My preference was to travel by train
I therefore used to work out what my budget was, typically £45
This could get me a Standard Apex return between Aberdeen and either York or Doncaster
This was useful as at the time the ECML electrification was progressing, so I made several trips to Doncaster in order to see Class 91 locos on the Kings Cross - Leeds service

My preference now is to travel by train for as long as possible
My next trip has a budget of £130 (actual cost £128.60)
I am therefore taking a First Class return trip between Glasgow and Rugby, travelling on the "quiet" 04:28 Glasgow - Euston, whcih gives me 3 hours at Rugby, and then taking the "slow train" back to Crewe (with 1 hour at Rugeley)

Try North Wales, use W/S, then do the circle Wrexham to Junction,Bleanau(passing through ther longest single track tunnel in the UK)short gauge to Porthmadoc, then back via Mach to Shrewsbury etc.

Also take the cheap day to Dublin & have a look at the wide guage.

Just an idea.

First off, my budget would be quite limited. £130 is two week's money!

Most appreciated. However, I would rather do this from Southend so that I could access the WSMR more easily (walk to Thorpe Bay at silly o'clock as opposed to catch a bus which doesn't even start until 08:15, which would miss the first WS service.)

You mean this one (with the out-dated map; it has Oldham on it)? If I can get a cheap return (or Advance if necessary) to Piccadilly I might just do this. Something like
MAN - BON - BBN - CLH - BBN - CNE - RSG - HBD - RCD - MCV - SHJ - LIV - KIR - WGW - WGN - EUX - BOL - WGN - MAN
maybe? would that be doable in one day?

Metro in West Yorkshire have the rail only Day Rover valid in the Metro area, which is very good value for money. So all you need to find is a couple of advance singles to Leeds (or even Wakefield) from Kings Cross. Also could spend an hour or two in Doncaster.

£46 each way can get you a Sail and Rail ticket to Belfast from Southend. These tickets are not tied to particular routes, trains or operators. Not 100% sure if open access operators are valid, so this wants checking. Assuming all operators are valid, to max out the interest try something like up to Scotland from London (ECML or WCML), then to Stranraer and into Belfast in the late evening. Kip in the Youth Hostel and next morning get a £15 day ticket and bash the whole NIR network in a day. Easy, plus the benefit of DEMUs on the Portrush and Larne lines. Once you've cleared the lines, stay on the Larne line DEMUs until you can't stay awake any more. Next morning get a GM hauled train to Dublin. You can get a ticket covering travel for the day on DART and local services, before taking the 21:20 boat to Holyhead. A thoroughly awful fester for the 05:32 WAG 57 hauled train as far as Chester, where more festering takes place (breakfast I guess), and a unit to Wrexham for the 11:27 Wrexham > Marylebone and home. I stayed in the Youth hostel in May for £8 a night, so this whole trip, totalling 4 days away with plenty of loco-haulage and ancient DEMUs, plus stacks and stacks of mileage, mostly on this side of the water, will cost only £123 plus whatever the Dublin day ticket costs (plus food and drink of course). In other words 4 x 30 odd quid days out.

You'd need to check the validity of the WSMR move, but frankly even if that wasn't possible and you had to come back straight from Crewe to London, it'd still be a cracking trip.

Do you need any kind of ID to use the ferry services? I know that a passport specifically isn't needed to Ireland, but I have no driving licence either.

Sounds great though :D

No. Ryanair are not involved, so no ID required :). Thinking more about it, if open access operators are allowed, you could use the 08:19 Grand Central as far as York, before picking up an EC to Glasgow for the train to Ayr or Kilmarnock to meet the Stranraer working. This gives you a 50/50 chance of Valentas at the moment, plus has the extra advantage that for some reason between Doncaster and York this train alone is routed via Hambleton south curve and Gascoigne Wood, coming into York from the Church Fenton direction.

All this itinerary will want checking by someone more expert than me though.

That's a magnificent trip! Makes me want to do Llanelli - Fishguard - Rosslare - Dublin - Belfast - Larne - Stranraer - Glasgow - Llanelli!

Thinking again about the Irish Odyssey, railcards are valid on Sail Rail tickets, so as a youngster Ivo could do it for even less! I kind of want him to do it now (including the Valenta and WSMR moves), so I can hear about it enjoy it vicariously! If I lived in the London area I'd arm myself with the best GC gen I could and do it myself!

I can't see why the route back via Wrexham wouldn't be valid, because Holyhead > Birmingham ATW trains all go that way now anyway, and breaking the journey at Wrexham would be a perfectly valid move. It's just whether WSMR is allowed (and GC) that wants clarifying.

I've just bought my Sail Rail ticket for the 2nd August from Dublin to Saltaire! Had to pay in Euros, but it worked out at £30.40 at today's exchange rate. All set for the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railway bash! My father's going to join me at Porthmadog after getting the 05:57 off York and going via Manchester > Shrewsbury > Machynlleth.

You mean this ticket?

SOUTHEND VICTORIA
BELFAST NI
w/ 16-25 RAILCARD

SOS £30.35
SOR £60.70

Utterly fantastic value. Especially when compared to some of the other SORs around on the route (e.g. SOV - GLC @ £208.55 and SOV - HHD @ £186.60). Once funds permit (which may not be for a couple of months sadly), I shall do this. And if GC and WS cannot be used, I shall use the Caley. It does say "Route Stranraer" though. (Also, do East Coast do First Class Weekend Upgrades?)

Ooh la la; £55 for a return from Holyhead to Dublin; £63 from Southend. £8 return to Holyhead! That can't be right! :D

I've never been to Northern Ireland before, and I've only been to the Republic once (Spring Bank Holiday weekend 2006), and then only to the SE of the country. I would love to go to Dublin :D How are plans for their Metro progressing? I will also use the Luas if I get an even remote chance.

For 4SRKT, as an apparent expert on Irish railways, I must ask something...

Are they always this cheap? :D

You'd need to specify route Holyhead on the return portion. This may mean you have to buy two singles, but it's the same price anyway. When I recently looked up Shipley > Belfast on National Rail Enquiries it routed me via Holyhead initially, and I had to add Stranraer as a via station. It was the same price either way. You also need to specify which boats you will use, but as this will almost certainly have to be the 19:55 Stranraer > Belfast and 21:15 Dublin > Holyhead that won't be any sort of issue.

Be careful not to be in Northern Ireland on a weekend. They use the DEMUs less then due to there being more CAF sets available for the Larne and Portrush lines.

Most infrastructure projects in the Republic are on hold due to there being even less money there than here these days. I'm sure the LUAS will be covered on the ticket I'm thinking of. I can't recall what it's called, but I suggest you contact Irish Rail. I think it goes out as far as Kildare, and if it does there's a loco haulage op on the 13:00 Dublin Heuston > Cork, which stops there. Most Cork trains don't and everything else is units now :(

Railways in Ireland are not much cheaper than here really. Especially in the Republic, but this is more to do with the exchange rate at the moment and the generally very high cost of living. Tip: buy your provisions for your day in and around Dublin in Northern Ireland before you go. As with all rail travel, it's a case of knowing where to get the best fares. Of course you can use this cheap Belfast ticket as an economical way to get to and from Scotland....

If you are going to do this, send me a PM with your postal address and I'll send you a set of NIR timetables, plus details of what trains are diagrammed for DEMUs and loco-haulage.

So it would be a £30.35 single to Belfast (via Stranraer), and a £42/£46 single back (via Dublin)?

As for travelling with WSMR, couldn't I just be a little naughty and buy an Advance from Wrexham to Marylebone and use that ticket between those two points instead? That could cost as little as £6.60; hardly a increase at all! Or, even, buy one to London, and one back - so I would do HHD - WRX - MYB - WRX - CRE - EUS...! (Is that taking it too far?)

Hmmm. Worth checking what the price of just Dublin > Southend would be. NIR are offering some very attractive online single advance fares to Dublin at the moment, from as little as £8.99. If you can get one of these, it might be worth your while only getting the Sail Rail from Dublin.

If you used a WSMR advance single ticket from Wrexham it would push you into a different Sail Rail zone (the Stena website has a map of the zones), so your Sail Rail ticket from Belfast/Dublin would be cheaper still. Might well be the right thing to do in fact as it removes any sort of doubt about the validity, but of course you'd have to buy a single from London to Saaahfend.

Alternatively, if you bought your Belfast/Dublin > Southend Sail Rail ticket, and went back to Wrexham with WSMR, and then wanted to go on the WCML from Crewe, you'd have to buy a single from Wrexham to Chester as well to get back on the route.

If you end up in Belfast it might be worth seeing if you can get on the SS Nomadic if you're interested in Titanic (it's the last surviving White Star Line vessel and was a tender ship to Titanic). I believe it's only open to tours now, but could still be worth a look.

For other destinations, Cambridge can be a good day out, especially on market days (I think Fridays, not sure if any other days). Equally, the Bedford-Bletchley line could be a good run - a few of the villages have nice country pubs (Lidlington and Aspley Guise mainly), or there's the forest centre which does food and is about a mile walk through a country park from Millbrook station.

I think that I can safely say that I know who to go to for advice on Ireland! I'll be sure to report back when the timetables arrive.

As for googolplex's advice, any ideas are welcomed :D I should say though, I was in Cambridge barely 200 hours ago...

"Saaahfend"? :D
