Dear All,

Just wondering if anyone knows, what will be working the Carlisle IceBreakers over the winter period 2013-2014?

Last year 86101 and 87002 did the honours but obviously they are no longer available.

no it isn't - the two electrics referred to above ran light up and down the northern WCML over night to keep the wires clear of ice.

I wonder if they will make an appearance this year.....

I will assume they will either be dragged with their pantograph up by a diesel or someone has decided to pay for GSM-R radio to be fitted..

Reported prematurely.

86101 was removed from Carlisle by road last time and it was reported the vehicle's working life was over due to an expensive exam required and no future work. (I saw it parked in Rickmansworth on a low loader a few days later)

Could they not just get a handcar and some guys with rakes? What's is the worst that can happen?

Its a shame they can't switch-in a high-resistance electrical load across an insulator to make a moderate current flow through the catenary and warm it up, remotely

I think you're referring to a 'load bank'. They're often installed into shipping containers, found on land, on ships, on trucks and, er, railway flat wagons. Also used by the railways to test the power output of generators in diesel-electric locomotives.

(Load banks are not usually used as a high resistance, as the bulk of a load-bank's design is in achieving good heat dissipation from low resistances)
