ICE via Mittenwald

Hi

I've travelled on the Innsbruck - Mittenwald - Munich route several times, however I note the following services (at least for a search after the timetable change) are operated by ICE stock.

- Sat ICE1206 10:23 Innsbruck - Hamburg Altona 20:45
- Sat ICE1207 08:28 Hamburg Altona - Munich Hbf 15:03 - Innsbruck 18:22
- Sun ICE1222 12:54 Innsbruck - Dortmund 23:20

I can't see a corresponding working to get the set to Innsbruck to work ICE1206 on the Saturday morning. Does anybody know if it runs empty on the Friday night / early Saturday morning, or does it run as an EC train via Rosenheim? Or something else!

Isn't there ICE1221 Dortmund-Seefeld on the Friday?
This must then travel empty to Innsbruck to form ICE1206 on the Saturday.

I've done the route in the distant past and I seem to remember ICs Karwendel and Wetterstein.
It's a fantastic walking area (eg Mittenwald-Garmisch on the opposite side of the mountains from the railway).

Terminating at Seefeld is a bit of an irritation but there’s certainly worse parts of the world to change trains!

Not sure if the steep gradient to Innsbruck is a hinderence for ICE to run beyond Seefeld.

It is not, ICE 1207 runs through to Innsbruck. It is probably for pathing reasons, ICE 1221 runs on Fridays just at a time when regional trains from Innsbruck run half-hourly (the line is single-track). The empty ICE continues to Innsbruck later in the day.

These ICE do not exist to serve Innsbruck anyway (much faster from Munich via Kufstein), but for the resorts up the mountain. Innsbruck is for servicing and stabling.
