Just had an enjoyable few days by the Rhine and noticed an occasional ICE going fast through Königswinter and wondered which route they were going from / to. Does anyone know?

Königswinter is usually just used as a diversionary route between Cologne and Koblenz when the route via Bonn is available. It does sound as it was a Hamburg Stuttgart or Vice versa service.
Was it an ICE 1 type?

They were ICE 3 trains. I think it was the first time I’ve seen any go through there, and I’ve been a fair few times.

The only option is between Cologne and Koblenz. I am not aware that the high speed line was closed but it must have been a diversion.
Not been in Königswinter for a while. Is the old fashioned level crossing beside the station still in place?

Best wishes from Duisburg.

The high speed line was partially closed for engineering from the 6th to the 8th May. Does that fit with your observation?

The level crossing next to the station on Bahnhofstraße is still operational, the one further down on Drachenfelsstraße is now pedestrian only and the signal box has been removed.

The dates you have said are before my visit which was 9-12 May, unless the works over-ran?

The only Thing I can find is a line side fire on the west bank line for the 12th but that does not explain ICE3.

Sorry not to be able to help any further and thank you for the inspiration to re-visit Königswinter.

No probs, thanks for looking, I wonder if they were just stock movements?

I’ll have quite a few films from around there uploaded in early June on my YouTube which is at www.mosstravel.tv if you’re interested.

Not likely. It would not make much sense. The sets are either needed at Cologne or Frankfurt and not anywhere between.
Thank you for the link.
