So I was looking at Hamburg to Copenhagen train this summer and while the rest are the usual IC 39X there is this one IC 1190 that's way outside that range so wondering if anybody knows if it's something special or just they ran out of 39X numbers and went with something else randomly?

Wouldn't be because it's summer only?

Just a thought.

That is year round services off Hamburg are: 0856, 1253, 1654

Between June and August they are:
1053, 1253, 1453 and 1853

But the other summer only are also 39X so that doesn't sound like the root cause

I went through the various services and the summer only ones are all IC11xx, the departure slot which applies year round is a 39x number:

1053 IC1196
1253 IC394
1453 IC1192
1853 IC1190

The 1253 is year round, the other 3 are summer only.

In previous years the temporary summer trains also used 39X but looks like it's been changed this year

One more thing: don't leave it too late to reserve a seat. These trains often sell out, especially in the summer!

Don't forget Snälltåget also have their Berlin-Hamburg-Malmö(-Stockholm) night train this summer, and it calls at Høje Taastrup for connections to Copenhagen. It's a short night's sleep but it might be attractive. SJ's new EuroNight service from Hamburg-Altona (not Hbf) to Stockholm Central will probably not start until September.

I couldn't say why the change has been made, but the first thing my brain went to with the differing train numbers was a dated service. Too much time spent looking at continental timetables probably!

One more thing: don't leave it too late to reserve a seat. These trains often sell out, especially in the summer!

Definitely, particularly as they are compulsory reservation during the summer.

Indeed. The best way is via DSB. It's only 30 DKK instead of 8 EUR via Interrail.

I would suggest DB instead as I believe they're slightly cheaper still, and apply per journey rather than segment. DB's Sparpreis- and Super-Sparpreis-Europa fares are also sometimes cheaper than any of DSB's offers if you're booking individual tickets rather than using a pass.

DB indeed charge 4€ per journey for reservations, but only if they're all optional reservations. Mandatory ones are extra and you can't book them on the DB website.

thanks for that, i had already booked my trip beforehand
i would have looked at Snälltåget but for a private compartment the prices are even worse than the Caledonia

If you were booking an Interrail reservation: Snälltåget have a bug on their booking platform that shows the normal fares for a private compartment instead of the fares for pass holders. Reservations for couchettes in a shared compartment and seats don't have this bug. Don't know if they've already fixed it.
