I have bought a super off peak return direct from the VTEC website. I chose the 15.05 KGX to LDS for this Friday (23/12) and secured a reservation for that service.
I'm now looking at the restrictions on the super off peak tickets that exclude trains departing 14:59 to 18:15 on Fridays, northbound from KGX.

So has VTEC sold me a ticket for a reservation I can't use?

Restrictions are usually waived around Christmas.

In any case, if a ticket is sold to you complete with reservation then contractually it becomes de facto valid regardless of any restrictions which state otherwise.

VTEC are not in the business of breaking consumer law and/or contract law, and will honour reservations as per the contract.

Even if it was a mistake, you'd not be penalised.

But it isn't a mistake:

Between Friday 23 December and Friday 30 December inclusive, all time restrictions for Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak and Off-Peak Day tickets will be lifted on our services too.

Anyone know if this applies to Virgin West Coast too? Can't seem to find anything on their website. I usually aim for a peak time service departure from London (I'm travelling Friday afternoon 23/12) as they are a lot less busy as my North Wales - London Off Peak Return allows travel during peak time apart from one particular departure. If the restrictions are lifted I may as well get on the first available train.

See VTWC off-peak restriction relaxation at Christmas?

And again, the same principle applies. If you buy a ticket with reservation and itinerary for a particular train, that is evidence of a contract, so you can simply trust the booking engines (even if they make a mistake; a mistake would be an internal rail industry matter and not a problem for the customers).

I do not think the relaxations at this time of year are a mistake, but the point is that you don't need to worry about whether mistakes have been made or not, if you book the ticket and travel in accordance with the itinerary.

Without wishing to go off-topic, two forum members recently travelled on this itinerary in 1st class for a bargain fare:
...What's the itinerary you ask (or, to be more accurate, may be thinking in your head)? It's this:

07:21 Hampton-in-Arden to Birmingham New Street 07:36
07:49 Birmingham New Street to Nottingham 09:06
09:34 Nottingham to Grantham 10:06
10:21 Grantham to York 11:30
11:54 York to Haymarket 14:31
14:57 Haymarket to Sandwell and Dudley 18:54

No kidding! How much? It came up to £5.77 each ....
I saw them at York. One of the Guards had queried the itinerary and it was reported for investigation so that the error could be fixed, but the customers' tickets were endorsed for travel in case any other staff queried it. But none did.

The general principle remains the same: you book a ticket with an itinerary and you follow that itinerary and that should absolutely be honoured as valid, regardless of whether or not it is a mistake.

North bound restriction from Kings Cross this Friday are relaxed

Northbound restrictions were also relaxed yesterday, and all* restrictions being so from today.
It seems to have been well communicated internally- I'm travelling on the 05:40 EDB-KGX with the return portion of a ticket with a 1V restriction, and it was accepted without hesitation (my ticket was the first checked on departing from Waverley).

*I think VTEC have eased all restrictions that they have the ability to do so- while they can accept them, they cannot formally unrestrict tickets with restrictions set by other operators, or those that are centrally controlled, such as B3

I think they've been doing the week equivalent of weekend first upgrades this week too, certainly yesterday i was on the 1508 out of King's Cross and a couple of nearby passengers paid £20, one to Doncaster and one to Leeds*. Incidentally, they were both booked on the 1505 Leeds train which was cancelled, the lady wanting Leeds was told to change at York to go to Leeds, a permitted route, but not sure ticket acceptance was fully in place.

Virgin usually operate weekend first class upgrades on public holidays and Xmas time.

It would be a 'VTEC & Connections' fare, so no issue.

(Would have been an issue if it had been a Sale ticket, but I think the Sale fares were not available until a few days into January)

Midweek Upgrade a promo that's been running for a while now it works by invitation only. Festive First is available from 23rd until the 2nd.

I gather that both were available at the same time yesterday!
