I tapped in, and out (any charge?)

Hi all,

I tapped in with my card at Luton parkway this eve, then plans were changed as I had to return home before the train arrived, and I tapped back out (10 mins or so after) to go home, I couldn’t get assistance at the gate, no one was around to ask or let me out so had no choice.

I would assume I won’t be charged as there is no station gate I tapped at, but wanted to ask advice

As you touched out between 2 and 30 minutes after touching in, you will be charged the fare for the cheapest possible journey from the station - in this case £2.80 (the off-peak fare from Luton Airport Parkway to Harpenden).

This should be refunded automatically, but if not you can request a refund in your TfL account (if you have not already registered your contactless card with one, you can still do so retrospectively).

If you had touched out less than 2 minutes after touching in, you would not have been charged as you used a contactless card (with Oyster, a maximum fare is charged - although Oyster is not accepted at Luton Airport Parkway)

If you had touched out more than 30 minutes after touching in, you would have been charged two maximum fares (£13.90 each for Luton Airport Parkway off-peak).

Gotcha that's fine! I won't bother chasing the £2.80.

The annoying thing is I actually booked my staff travel and the ticket I got was only 80p to Luton and back, however I booked it for tomorrow not realising and not today hence why I had to use my card to tap in because I can't buy tickets on the same day with my app/ account!

It's a lesson learned!

Worldline sites like RST Online say that if you're trying to do something like searching for a ticket to depart at 0900 on the day of travel when it's already 0930, or if you change the outward month but not the return (it doesn't do so automatically for some reason.)
