Does anyone have any recommendations for good book on the Isle of Wight railway.
I am more interested In the period since electrification in the 1960s and the Standard tube stock that was operating at the time.

I was on the Isle of Wight last weekend and traveled on the "Tube" trains and the Isle of Wight Steam railway which was great.

Whilst at the main station on that line, Haven Street, I went into their sales shop and there were lots of different books all about the trains on the island, from steam to the present day electric.

I had a query too about the electric Tube trains, I have been told that from the late 1960s for about 20-30 years, they were using old 1920s London Tube stock, these were replaced, with "newer" stock from 1938.

I was also there on Saturday and as suggested by STEVIEBOY1 above it might be worth contacting the bookshop at Havenstreet

Thanks for the replies, I will try The bookshop and London Underground Railway Society as I believe that had a book on the standard stock out some years ago.

yes, the replacement for steam was by 1927 LT stock, characterised by the electrical gear being in a compartment behind the driving cab and making lovely mechanical sounds when accelerating. One reason was problems of salt water while on Ryde pier so electrical gear in a compartment as opposed to underfloor was a plus point. Ryde tunnels tend to flood during prolonged periods of wet weather so the smaller profile of "tube" stock enabled the track to be raised

Under the Southern unit classifiaction these were designated 4VEC and 3TIS "Vectis" being the Latin name for the island

Upon withdrawal 5 fortunate cars returned to LT to form a heritage set. Replacement was by the current 1938 tube stock

They have abandoned the idea of having a whole train and three of the ex IOW cars have been scrapped: 2 7 44

27 and 49 are stored at Acton Depot, condition unknown (to me at least)
