Are you going via the West Coast main line (i.e. via London Euston)?

via the west coast from stansted to london? are you on drugs? <D

For me, first class is only worth it on express trains, not commuter units

Are you talking about Liverpool Street in London or Liverpool Lime Street in Liverpoool?

If you read the posts, you will see no mention of London at all. Pot, kettle anyone?

It's very unclear form the Op what journey is beign made. My point was don;t assume it;s going to liverpool or London without clarification! J0hn0 had a go at someone for mentioning the West Coast - we don;t know that the OP is not going from Stansted to Liverpool via London!

Almost everyone coming through Stansted asks for "Liverpool station" when they mean London Liverpool Street. It's not actually much of an assumption, especially when I hear this question almost every day.

Pictures...? No. I drive the Stansted Express.

The only advantage you get in first is a slightly bigger seat but that's it. The catering trolley goes through the entire train.

Oh how I hated this in the days of Central Trains running Stansted-Liverpool Lime Street. I kicked out so many passengers at Audley End who had misread and didn't interpret my announcements correctly.

Not worth it- even if you do get an actual Stansted Express unit (rather than a West Anglia one) only about half of them have 2+1 sets in 1st class- the others have 2+2, like the West Anglia 317s. If you get a West Anglia unit, some of these don't even have tables in 1st class.. It may be "only" £22 for a child 1st class return bought in advance, but it is only £13.35 in Standard. You're not on the train long enough for it to be worth £8.65 to upgrade.
