hello. I am a railroad fanatic living in Korea.

While studying mechanics in high school and junior college, I also watch railroad cars.

I have a question.

I was watching a video about British Rail on YouTube and I have a question.

I confirmed on YouTube that the 89001 locomotive, Brighton Belle, and Class 92 GBRf locomotive were equipped with Mark 4 TPWS.

Originally manufactured by Thales, they are now manufactured by Hitachi Rail. I have a question about this.

I saw a photo of the 89001 cab a while back and confirmed that TPWS was used as standard equipment.

I'd like to know if production of the standard TPWS has been discontinued.

I wrote it in Korean and translated it into English using Google Translator. Please understand.

Mark 4 TPWS has many functional improvements over the previous versions, and has been mandatory for all new vehicles for some years; also where significant modifications have been made.

Two manufacturers have product lines that meet the Mark 4 TPWS standards: Thales (now Hitachi) and Unipart. I understand that the class 88 locomotives (for example) have the Unipart version, Classes 92 and 89, as examples, have the Hitachi version.

Though 89001 did have an old TPWS installation, it had been installed after withdrawal from main line traffic with with GNER so had never been approved for main line use. So it was decided to meet the latest standards and replace the old parts with a new Mark 4 installation.

"Original" TPWS will still be supported for spare parts and repairs, as many vehicles still have it fitted, with Unipart and Thales versions; but you would not fit it to a new train.

Thanks Paul for your detailed response. You are correct that the Vossloh/Stadler EuroDual UK locomotives (Classes 68, 88, 93, 99) are fitted with Unipart TPWSfour. GBRf’s latest EMD locomotives (Class 66s imported from mainland Europe and Class 69) are also fitted with Unipart.

Mors-Smitt also offers ’Enhanced TPWS’ compliant to RIS-0775-CCS Issue 3 but I don’t remember what they call their version.

I'm glad to see Unipart Rail still getting a mention, over 9 years after I left . Once the S&T workshops

I saw a photo of a Class 99 locomotive cab a while back.

I confirmed it wasn't a Unipart TPWSfour. Is it a Mors-Smitt?

Based on the equipment photos, I suspect it's a Mors-Smitt product.

How should I inquire if I want to know exactly?

Should I contact GBRf, the railway operator, or Stadler, the locomotive manufacturer?

I'm having trouble finding the information due to a lack of resources, so I'm asking.

My apologies. On the Class 99 cab photo, that does appear to be a Mors-Smitt TPWS DMI (driver-machine interface) rather than Unipart.

You would most likely only get an answer to your question if you are providing an engineering service to Stadler or GBRf.

There is no such thing as Mark 4 TPWS standards. There is a Rail Industry Standard RIS-0775-CCS AWS and TPWS Requirements. The Hitachi Rail (was Thales GTS) TPWS latest version control unit is just that and called their 'TPWS Mk4' control unit previous versions are Mk1 & Mk3, the Unipart version is just that their version and called 'TPWS four' control unit both will meet RIS-0775-CCS.

I'd like to know if production of the standard TPWS has been discontinued.
If by this you mean the Thales Mk1 Control Unit, yes that is discontinued and is obsolete. The Thales Mk3 Control unit is a straight swap fit physically and electrically and has a couple of new features. However the driver facing part of the TPWS system such as the brake demand, temporary isolation/fault and train stop override lights and switch are the same. The other parts such as the Alarm & Indicator unit with the signal sunflower or separate horn, bell and sunflower (signal mimic) and the AWS acknowledge/reset button are from the previous AWS system as the TPWS system now does those functions as well.

Also to help your understanding in the UK we call it the railway (rail) that trains run on, and roads for cars, not the two together (railroad)
