I dont understand running codes.

Just for reference, the WTTID is unique for a given service on a given day. As well as the "visible" part (such as 1G20), there are another four characters that appear on TRUST to aid identification.

So our hypothetical 1G20 on the 6th of the month might have a "full" headcode similar to 1G20MD06.

I'm sure in a very short amount of time they would learn to be able to delay the trains as well as any British signalman, in the same way they have with the planes.

They must be allocated elsewhere by the system then, as we can only specify the first 6 alpha-numeric items.

Last two are always the day of the month. There's probably an internal document somewhere that dictates how the other "private" bits are allocated.

Haha, yes, please do not allow the way Britain's trains are run to expand into mainland Europe, why should they be made to operate to our very poor standards in comparison, I would have to cancel all of my future holidays as it's the one good thing I always enjoy when leaving the UK.

Being at work now I'm in a position to give more specific examples.

Today's 0700 from Marylebone to Birmingham (1G07) can be identified as 631G07MA08, C94350 (UID) or CH1701 (RSID). Of those, only the first example uniquely identifies it as today's train, the UID and RSID are the same every day (at least in the Long Term Plan).

Looking at TRUST, there are two other trains with headcode 1G07 at present:

05:14 Aberystwyth - Birmingham International (641G07M508)
08:03 Euston - Birmingham New Street (721G07MC08)

In the TRUST help, the first seven characters (e.g. 721G07M) are referred to as the "Unique Headcode" and the full ten characters are referred to as the Train ID. It doesn't enlighten you as to how they're derived, however!

The first two characters are related to the location of origin, if my understanding is correct (first two digits of STANOX number??), followed by the four character TD obviously. The M stands for Mandatory (not sure what the alternatives are!), and I've not a clue about the eighth character. The last two are today's date.

The 7th character can also be C for Conditional.

The 8th character is the departure time from origin station

0 = 0000-0059, 1 = 0100-0159, up to 6 = 0600-0659
A = 0700-0729, B = 0730-0759, up to X = 1830-1859
Y = 1900-1959, Z = 2000-2059, 7 = 2100-2159, 8 = 2200-2259, 9 = 2300-2359

The 4 digit codes are used by signallers to identify trains, and by drivers to identify their trains when delayed at signals, so there would be obvious confusion if two trains had the same code on the signallers' panel at the same time. Signal box train describers can only show 4 digits.
