It must be quite upsetting about the car, and all the hassle it causes. Sadly those who do this sort of thing seem to get away with it time after time, the courts giving a wrap on the knuckles and told "don't do it again".

The sentencing guidelines are there for a reason. Community Sentences are often much better than short prison sentences - if you look at the reoffending statistics for Scotland or England & Wales, you'll see that the effectiveness of Community Sentencing is increasing, while the effectiveness of short prison sentences is decreasing. In fact, there's a considerable argument to say that short sentences cause more crime than they forget.

That said, fines are also fairly effective in preventing reoffending - but with the amount these guys can make from theft, it's hardly denting their pockets

Bloody maddening to see that Madge, brings back bad memories of the late 80s joyriding scum.
Sadly your next robbery will be from your insurers come renewal time too.

Bet you feel like paying some of your sons mates to do them over incognito.....

But who has any authority over the Judges? No one at all. They're unanswerable to no one, and it seems are impossible to fire on grounds of incompetence.

Take Bin Laden's former right hand man in Europe, Abu Qatada who the UK government is trying to do the right thing and deport him to his home country of Jordan.

However a unanswerable judge Mr Justice Mitting from the Special Immigration Appeals Commission is preventing this and he's not the only one.

What about the judges from the European Court of Human Rights, who are they answerable to? What gives them the right to ride roughshod over a country's sovereignty and interfer with the justice system in any country?

Least the two guys above that I have mentioned have been provided to be effective at their jobs.

They don't get to go in front of a judge, they don't get arrested.

No one cares, the scum can do what they like, go where they like and get away with it.

This was the headline story in the Sheffield Stay tonight

ALMOST 30,000 vehicles have been stolen in the last six years in South Yorkshire – and only half have ever been seen again, The Star can reveal exclusively today.

Figures disclosed as part of our Your Right to Know campaign show that in the last month alone 222 vehicles have been stolen. In the previous 12 months, 3,035 were taken.

But the level of offending is reducing year on year. (who are they kidding )

Detective Chief Inspector Sean Middleton told The Star some vehicles are stolen to sell or to be broken up into spare parts.

But others are weighed in and sold simply for their scrap metal value.

He said as part of the police crackdown, officers have targeted the top 10 prolific offenders in each of the policing districts – Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster – and as a result have seen offences drop. Officers monitored the criminals’ movements and made them aware they were being watched.

Officers are also involved in covert operations and work with the vehicle crime intelligence service, run by the Association of Chief Police Officers. He said car crime crooks operated at all levels, ‘from organised groups who target and steal high value vehicles to sell on, to those who steal to break them up, to opportunist thieves who steal to fund a drug habit’.

He added: “It is more difficult to steal cars these days without a key, so that is why those involved often break into houses to get the keys. So we need people to do their bit by looking at their home security. It’s no good having a £1,000 front door if you have a £12 lock.

“People also need to keep their car keys out of sight.”

I think this guy in the police wants to live in the real world where his vehicle gets nicked and then have the police treat you more like the criminal because they don't care.
He really does not know...the keys were in the living room the car was not started in the drive . I did hear 6 were stolen last night alone all 4 x 4

Besides the shock news about how many serving police officers in Hertfordshire have criminal records (including theft and fraud!), I was also 'surprised' to see the results of their bi-annual drink drive clamp down, for summer and Christmas. In the summer, they found 14% of drivers stopped were over the limit. At Christmas it was 11% and they were proud to state that this was a big drop! We're supposed to be reassured?

The fact that 1 in 10 motorists are over the limit makes me think it's time to get out there doing more stops throughout the year. How the hell are they happy to do so few stops when it's obvious that people are chancing it all the time. What's more, I am sure many people are aware of more checks at Christmas, but what about the chancers who drive home drunk just for a mile or two from the pub/club/gym every night?

I gave up reporting small crimes (stolen property from front garden for example) as the police aren't interested. They wouldn't even record my car being keyed as a crime as there were no witnesses, and when I had my road tax stolen by a backstreet motor mechanic (the only person who had access to the car other than me, as no windows were broken or the doors forced), they said it was quicker for me to report it lost than stolen. Less paperwork and I'd get a replacement just the same. Yet, if this mechanic was stealing MY tax disc, how many others did he take? They didn't even want to know where I'd gone, so clearly didn't want to investigate later on either.

Finally, when the same car was broken into a few months later, leaving broken glass everywhere and blood on the side of the car (DNA?), they didn't even come out. It was a Sunday, so I guess SOCO wasn't working. The car was written off as a result of them breaking in, popping the bonnet and taking loads of parts (old car, so someone obviously needed lots of bits and didn't want to pay for new ones).

So, I am never surprised to see crime figures going down. Why would anyone bother to call the police these days? For a while I thought I'd report absolutely everything so that the figures didn't drop, but the civilians at the front desk now make you feel so unwelcome, or that you're a troublemaker/moany old git, that I'd only want to go to a police station for a VERY serious crime they can't ignore (murder, rape etc) or if I'm brought in having reached my 'Falling Down' moment. :)

Hi Newbie Babs - a terrible thing to have gone through. Both upsetting and inconvenient, but the former much more so than the latter.

I have to say I had cause to report a problem to the police a fortnight ago. The guy I've been talking to has been fantastic - quick to respond to me, quick to act and I'm just awaiting a phone call to say the matter has been resolved. Doesn't help you, of course. :(

Hi LCC106

It was good you got someone to assist you, this is not the first time for us this has happened since I have lived in Sheffield. I have found over 24 years the police attitude is upsetting and you feel you really should not bother reporting anything, they never attend anything you report.

If you live in a hot spot in Sheffield where the police don`t like to go to, then sadly for most things we don`t report but for this I can`t afford to go out and buy another vehicle without a crime number. Crime number (what does that mean actually) that's funny there is a crime but no one comes to visit you, you would almost think its like when you ring up HSBC and you get to speak to someone in India, because for them I assume they have got fed up of asking the details and you are another number to them.

Reading this thread makes me more and more depressed at realising what has happened to this country, which used to be an honest and decent place.

It would seem that the police are trying to blame theft on the victims, but why should I be at risk just because my front door is not protected by half a dozen dead locks and an alarm?

In a decent society, I should be able to go out and leave the front door unlocked then return to find nothing missing because the population are law abiding.

Then we have the argument that non custodial sentences have a lower re-offending rate than a short prison stay, which may be perfectly true, but is missing the point entirely. The object of punishment is to deter people from committing the crime in the first place, and that comes from the fear of the punishment.

So we now have a feeling that if a crime is committed the victim was asking for it anyway because their security was below par, and the criminal (in the unlikely event he is caught and prosecuted) will get a few hours community service, and a talk from a counsellor who will probably be told a bunch of lies and believe every word.

Maybe I will buy a remote Pennine farmhouse and become a recluse.

In Retirement.
They should bring back suspended sentences for this sort of thing. Feet about 6" off the ground should do nicely. Re-offending rate 0%.

The sad thing is, although statistically a small Pennine farmhouse may suffer lower crime you aren't all that far from the scum. You'd probably then spend the rest of your days lying awake with a loaded shotgun under your pillow, jumping at every noise with no mobile signal and cut phone lines whilst you wait to be tied up and beaten by gangs of organised travelling burglars knowing all the while that you are 50 miles from the nearest hospital- i'm not sure the grass is always greener tbh!

I suppose a little Pennine village- eg Dent might be ok or a distant Scottish island/ somewhere in the western highlands?!!

PS yes my glass is half empty lol

PPS before I get jumped on for being frivolous on a serious thread, I have had cars broken into four times and vandalised once, only reported the first three. The first time they broke into my garage and stole the Alpine system from my XR3i(no sniggering at the back- this was cool in the early 90s), a week later they broke in again and failed to steal it after cleanly removing all the physical anti theft devices and forcing the ignition. I was ahead of them, cos i'd taken off the battery:)

Had an attempted theft of my series 3 a couple of years later (again, a rather sneaky home made immobilser stopped the theft, if not the damage). A few years later still, the series 3 suffered forced locks and smashed column shroud, wiring. They came back and slashed a tyre a few days afterwards probably out of spite.
Hardly related, but around about the time of the first attempt on the landy northumbria police were in the press for wasting hundreds of thousands (including police helicopters) hounding a young woman who had thrown an apple core out of her car- not that I defend the actions of the woman but hey, limited resources hmm?

Sorry to hear what happened to you, unfortunately there seems to be no deterrent for these people who think its fun to do this. I am sure there is a suitable punishment for this on the statue books but society today seems unable to implement them. Hope there is no problem with the insurance.

A tort is a civil wrong, hence prohibited not only by civil law but also by judicial precedent.

Civil law does not make anything a criminal offence. It may discourage me from, for example, trespassing on your property but it does not prohibit or ban it. It merely opens me up to the risk of litigation.

There is no civil law statute which prohibits me from falling below the standard of care expected from me. I will not be arrested and charged if I breach a duty of care (unless GNM). Thus, I am not prohibited from breaching my duty of care, only placing myself at risk of litigation. The only tort I can think of that actually comes from legislation is statutory torts, like product liability or occupiers liability. Some common law torts have also been translated into legislation like restraint of trade and Competition law.

That's a whole different kettle of fish! Is the purpose of the sentence to deter, to punish, or to protect?

Most people aren't scared of the consequences when they break the law.

i've never heard of that happening before, why on earth would anybody let alone an insurance company be allowed to torch a car in a public place.

I have to say it sounds a bit weird to me as well.
I have to also say that the picture looks very "stock" like, but that may just be me

A few years ago I had a paper round (like probably 50% of other people aged 13 - 15 who earn money). One night, March 1st 2005 (sad I know), my sister came along with me. We made a pit stop at the shop close to home, and whilst there a gang of lowlife losers were skulking around. My sister and I went in, and out - and the head "lowlife", aged just 11, headbutted me against the underside of my cheekbone (by jumping before you ask how he reached my head!). I went home after that and my mother finished the round. But before I went home, I did the two houses that were practically opposite our front door - and my sister pushed the little scumbag and he took a dive when I wasn't looking.

Two weeks later, my aunt took me to the police station for an interview, where the police revealed that the twerp had said I headbutted him! Now, never mind the fact I would have had to duck to do so, by which time he could have dodged, it was also a ridiculous thing to tell the police. My aunt assured them that I would never do such a thing, and they were only too happy to believe that.

In the end? He got off scot-free (even though he had long been known to the police) - and my sister got a Caution - and was semi-regularly hunted down by his sister. The only punishment his family faced was that "we" stopped ddelivering to them! (Considering they lived three minutes from the local shop though...)

Finally, another three years down the line, he was finally sent down after committing a substantial number of other offences. I don't know how long he was inside for though; even before you consider his age (no excuse), I don't suppose it was very long at all...

For those on here today who suggested that I had made up the story of the theft and the vehicle was never in my family, I suggest that all the members on a rally forum for all rally drivers, marshals etc in the UK might have something to say about accusations and dodgy photos. The photo was posted on there last Saturday as well.

The vehicle in the photo was seen at all events and it was known well.

I am shocked I have had to justify myself on here and been asked to do so after the posts by moderators as well.

The vehicle was recovered by Woodhead Recovery, why dont those in doubt ring and ask if a vehilce was recovered last Saturday in Sheffield a vehicle it took until 4pm to get out.

I have never been so offended to be accused of lying and making up stories something I have not done since primary school and after you have rung them I am waiting for my apologies or are you not MAN enough to do so

I am pleased that the little altercation has been dealt with, but you still shouldn't have needed to justify yourself. Here is hoping things correct themselves soon, and these lowlife scumbags get what is coming to them.

I said the photo looked dodgy. I didn't say you made everything up. In fact, I don't think anyone accused you of lying.

I am waiting for my apologies or are you not MAN enough to do so

That's quite offensive too, don't you think?

The insults have been flying from all corners and since this now appears to be going in circles it's probably best to call it a day.
