Huyton to Metrolink - puzzled

I asked at Huyton today for a ticket for 1 adult + 2 children with Family Railcard to Timperley Metrolink. I was told £20ish (when the machine eventually applied a railcard discount- £27 initially)

On checking because it sounded high I was told this included £5.65 for the metro for me and £2 for each of the children. It's only £4 and £1.50 to buy separate Metro tickets (which is what I did bringing the total cost down to £17ish - can't find the exact amount)!

Is there a premium for including Metrolink in rail tickets or am I missing the point?

Sounds like you have been charged the M-F peak Metrolink fare as the add-on.

It's probably too late now but you could have had a Metrolink family ticket for £5!

I never think to get the family ticket but you're right - it would often save me money at the weekends if I did!

It's more often than not cheaper to buy Metrolink tickets separately; I don't know why they had to confuse the ticketing as much as they have done :?

You can't get a through ticket using a railcard,you have probably been charged full fare you should have just booked to manchester and rebooked there for the metrolink

Correct. Book to Manchester Stations with the FAM railcard.

No railcard discount to Met stops, so on arrival at Piccadilly or Victoria, go to a yellow machine *only the ones which take banknotes!* and buy a Family Return or Family Day-Travelcard or Family Weekend-Travelcard from it. Some great value family fares on Metrolink that you don't need a paid-for railcard to buy.

I'm really not sure where those prices have come from. The Off Peak Day Return from Huyton to Timperley Mtlk is £15.00 and from Huyton to Manchester is £10.70. The difference is £4.30 which the Metrolink website tells me is the same as the Off Peak Return fare from Piccadilly to Timperley.

An adult and two children from Huyton to Timperley Mtlk would be £30.00, so one third off that would be £20, but this would not be the charge for a F&F Railcard holder, even if it was allowed, because the child fare is not 1/3 off.

£27.80 is the cost for a group of that size for a single without a Railcard to Timerley Mtlk. As stated above a return is £30.00.

This country doesn't really believe in integrated transport. It's not always cheaper to "split" but it often is, and in this case it certainly is! A Family ticket for the Metrolink is good value and allows a group of up to 3 adults and 3 children, but even with a smaller group it's the best ticket to get.

If you attempt to buy a ticket to include a rail and Metrolink journey then a railcard discount shouldn't be available at all on the ticket according to some ticket office staff. Although, some online sites ticket selling sites indicate that a discount is available for the same tickets that ticket office staff advise that it isn't.

While it would take a bit longer you can get a Liverpool-Altrincham ticket (valid via Huyton) for 1 adult + 2 children for £13.10 single with a F&F railcard.

Altrincham-Timperley Metrolink is £2.80 single for 1 adult + 2 children.

That would have been a total of £15.90 for the journey.

Is there a difference between the Metrolink machines which take banknotes and those that do not? Just wondering why you pointed that out. I usually pay for stuff by card.

Yes. The 'note takers' sell tickets for multiple persons, and a range of daysaver 'Travelcard' tickets.

The 'card/coin only' ones only Single & Return journeys for one person only - ie not Family products.

I use through-tickets every day and even I sometimes get short-changed like this! Grr!!
